5.0 out of 5 stars A great treat for country and city dwellers alike!, October 31, 2000
This review is from: Pearls of Country Wisdom: Hints from a Small Town on Keeping Garden and Home (Hardcover)
Knowing Deborah personally, I can say she lives what she writes. She's a precious woman, who has learned to move from city to country and can help anyone who wants to do the same! The tips in this book however are not only for country folks! Being a city dweller myself, I found them timely, cost saving and just plain interesting to say the least- ideas I never would have thought of. If you own Carla Emery's book, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA TO COUNTRY LIVING, you will love this book as well- it's a great compliment and there are not any repeats of information. I love the lawn care and kitchen helps, as we have children with allergies and a dog that we don't want to use alot chemicals around. The tips in this book are invaluable and well worth the monies! I really love the updated design and hardcover version of this treasure as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pearls Indeed!, January 26, 2001
This review is from: Pearls of Country Wisdom: Hints from a Small Town on Keeping Garden and Home (Hardcover)
Whether you live in the country, plan to move, or simply dream about - this is the book you'll want to own. Tips on living smarter, spending less and making it all last longer make this book a pearl indeed. It wasn't all that long ago that people knew how to live without every modern convenience. Country wisdom gleened from many sources is delivered in this first rate edition. Some ideas are practical, common sense items, some you'd never think of. I'm keeping this book nearby for reference and inspiration. It goes along perfectly with my collection of Tightwad Gazette books. Buy this book, learn how to conserve, reuse, make do and pass it on to others.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst!, October 28, 2007
By
Don't judge a book by its cover -- the cover is the only thing half-way "professional" about this strange book. This is one of THE worst books I've ever attempted to read. Sorry, but it's true. You can tell the "author" edited the book herself -- the topics are disorganized and the writing is well...I can't imagine why the publisher accepted a self-edited manuscript. The contents remind me of a product of a vanity press. The "pearls" are often bizarre and sound as if they were gleaned from the Dark Ages. Making dresses from flour sacks is essentially the type of "tips" you'll get. The photos are b/w and poor quality. Really odd stuff. Thoreau would have moved back to the city if this was the type of "wisdom" he had received to live simply and frugally. Your local extension agency will have better information, and free of charge.
