Book Description

3 and up

Chanukah's here, and Pearl is looking forward to celebrating it with her family. But there's one problem -- Pearl's just found out that her cousins, Harry and Sophie, will be joining them for all eight nights of Chanukah, and she fears the worst. After all, it was Sophie who once put a latke on Pearl's chair for her to sit on, and everyone knows that Harry is like a "vilde chaya" -- a wild animal. Fortunately, Pearl doesn't have time to worry about her cousins, because each night they do something special: They make menorahs, prepare latkes and jelly doughnuts, sing holiday songs for a friend in a nursing home, and make dreidels and puppets. Once the flurry of activity ends, Pearl sits down to write about the week -- and realizes that the true joy of Chanukah comes from being with loved ones.

Jane Breskin Zalben's intricately detailed, jewel-like illustrations are a delight to the eye, and evoke the warmth and spirit of Chanukah. Easy-to-follow instructions are included for each activity, making this ideal for families who wish to create their own Chanukah traditions.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2?In Zalben's third book featuring Pearl and her little brother Avi, the children's twin cousins Sophie and Harry come to spend the eight days of Chanukah with them. Pearl is less than thrilled, but the joy of the holiday brings them all together and the visit turns out to be a success for everyone. As Pearl and her family (depicted as sheep) celebrate each night, readers are drawn into their cozy life while learning a bit about the holiday and getting ideas for craft projects, recipes, songs, and activities. The strength of this book lies in the depiction of Chanukah as a time to celebrate and enjoy the company of friends and family. The illustrations, rendered in gold leaf, colored pencils, and watercolor, are warm and appealing. The craft instructions vary in the amount of detail given, but motivated adults should be able to follow them.?EM

From Booklist

Ages 4^-8. In a companion to Pearl Plants a Tree (1995) and Pearl's Marigolds for Grandpa (1997), the family of rams celebrates Hanukkah with a visit from cousins Harry and Sophie. Interspersed between short vignettes about Pearl and her family's activities are directions for making menorahs, dreidels, and puppet shows; recipes for latkes and jelly doughnuts; a recounting of the Hanukkah legend; songs; and more. Directions are clear, but most projects will require adult assistance. The watercolor-and-pencil illustrations teem with intricate details and portray a loving family engaged in typical holiday activities and occasionally annoying each other. A perfect choice for young families establishing their own traditions or as a resource for teachers in religious schools. Kay Weisman
