More About the Author
So he found himself sitting in class at UCLA Law School, hopelessly bored, sketching the character Rat (who would later become a mainstay of all his future comic strips). Creative inspiration followed him through graduation in 1993 to his first law firm job in San Francisco, where by 1996 he finally started submitting his comics to syndicates. Persisting through an initial spate of rejections, Stephan Pastis created his signature strip Pearls Before Swine and eventually signed on with his syndicate in 1999. Pearls was off and running, making appearances on the web, in newspapers, and in many best-selling books.
In 2013, inspired to break out of the box of a daily comic strip, Pastis took on the new challenge of becoming a children's author, penning the first book in a projected middle grade series called Timmy Failure, about an inept kid detective and his sidekick polar bear. Fail it did not; receiving stellar reviews and becoming an instant New York Times and National Indie bestseller. Now published in nearly 40 languages worldwide, Pastis' defective detective is poised to become the next big breakout children's book character.

This collection has a special significance for me. Around the time parts of the book's strips were running in papers was when my grandmother died. She had been living with my family for three years and it hit me hard. This strip helped me through the aftermath. This is more than just controversy and cheap laughs. There is something about the writing that really touches people (as seen in the second treasury Lions and Tigers and Crocs, Oh My!: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury with the Jerusalem bus strip. If you are ever in a funk and need help then this strip can be that help.
This latest treasury (as of late 2012) contains the typical wacky humor of the Pearls series. Like other treasuries, it also includes author Pastis's annotations, so readers can discover what he thinks of each strip. That's a nice touch not found in most other cartoon treasuries and makes the Pearls treasuries a bit more essential for true fans.
Though the title of this one, with its grawlix (which takes the place of profanity), seems unnecessary, amping up that image of being cutting edge without being TOO cutting edge is de rigueur. This is a favorite of a 12-year-old, remember, and Pearls definitely has that "could have been in MAD Magazine" feel to it. So there you go.
If you like Pearls Before Swine and feel a need to have it ever before you, then this is a must buy.
I love my daily dose of Pearls and I love to read the compilations...especially since my local paper is too chincy to run the Sunday strip (I guess too many Lio fans?).
Long Live Rat!
Note that this is a 'collection' which means it contains the contents of other, smaller books. The collections also have great commentary by Stephan Pastis (I'm not sure if the individual books do, I only have the collections).
After I said that "Pearls Sells Out" was my favorite, I realized that I neglected this one. So this is actually my favorite of my favorites. ;) Do yourself a favor and but it. They're all a lot of fun.
