5.0 out of 5 stars A very solid combination of rock and electronica., July 20, 2009
This review is from: Pearls To Pigs [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
Pearls to Pigs is not a perfect album, but it has enough high points and original ideas to captivate. Modwheelmood suffers from a bit of Radiohead envy, but these days who doesn't. Infusing techo beats and a drum machine with guitar and other traditional instruments is hardly new, but Modwheelmood does is better than most. Alessandro Cortini (one of the band's founders) toured with Nine Inch Nails and the house and electronica influences are put to good use here.

MHz and Crumble are the standout tracks of the album. Mhz is a solid 5 minute rocker with a great synthesized bass line and enough electronic flourishes layered in to make the song more rewarding with each listen. Crumble takes advantage of harmonies and a simple guitar riff to make a catchy and uplifting song. The vocals are on the higher side and are similar in style to Thom Yorke and Matthew Bellamy, but less whiny (which is a good thing).

MHz and Crumble are by no means the only good songs on here. Bellevue Ave., Sunday Morning, If I Was You, and Lie are all wonderful songs that would be the highlights of most other albums. And while not every song is a masterpiece (Thursday is a rather boring instrumental), the good is good enough to outweigh the bad make the album deserve a five star rating.

The bottom line is that this an exceptional album that is worth more than the $8 price.
