Von Pea's quite a hard worker; and he was working on a winner with his debut. I knew about this album's concept for quite awhile, as he used to have a Myspace that was based around it dating back to around '07 from what I remember.
Anyway, Pea's Gotta Have It is a quality debut from someone who's used to being a part of quality underground hip hop. Personally, I find Pea the most complete of the three Tanya members based on his ability to produce some dope beats along with his lyricism. In this album, he does his fair share of production, while Aeon carries the bulk (and brings a unique style to it), and Tanya Morgan's Cincy-based "in house" producer BrickBeats provides some heat with "The Yorker" and "Dreams", two of my favorite cuts on the album.
Von's first effort is cohesive, and stands well as a concept album. You can't expect lyrics that go too deep on an effort that is based off of a high school journal, but he shows growth nonetheless. He's progressed by developing his cadence and following the rhythm of the productions on songs, slowing up on songs like "Open School" and speeding up on "The Yorker". Von's definitely not the type of rapper that is stuck to the hackneyed club scene with a slow, dumbed-down flow track after track. Plus, he did a great job finding some solid female rappers for his features. Rapsody, Uzoy and Keisha Shontelle do a great job representing the women on his "co-ed" tracks.
For a debut, Pea's Gotta Have It is very strong; he's used to the game by now with several acclaimed albums under his belt with Tanya Morgan, so it's not a shocker. If you're a fan of above-average underground production and appreciate fun-loving hip hop lyrics, Pea's Gotta Have It is a record with plenty of playback potential. It's worth your hard-earned money. The physical copy is worth owning, as the album art is also very well done by Joe Buckingham (of Native Tongues fame).
So... Buy the CD!
I'd name favorites but there's no songs that are that bad that I'd purposely skip over.
