Pecan Pie Baby is a great book for kids who are adjusting to a new family member. It honors the child who is feeling a little out. Kid's about to have a sibling will be comforted by the message that they will always be special to their mom and that a new addition can be a sweet thing.

Pecan Pie Baby by Jacqueline Woodson is about a little girl who is troubled because she will soon be an older sister, but she does not want her mother to have another baby. Gia, the soon to be older sister, is tired of everyone reminding her about the baby. Everything she does and everywhere she goes, someone is talking about the baby. One night, when her entire extended family comes over for a Thanksgiving meal, Gia gets fed up with all the baby talk, so she yells out how she doesn't want the baby to come. The issue is resolved when later that night her mother consoles her and tells her that she too will miss the times when it was just the two of them, and that Gia should tell the baby all about them.

This book is a great book for introducing alternative families because in the book there is no father. Gia and her mother live alone together. Also when her aunts and uncles come over, not all of them are the same race. These different family arrangements introduce to young readers the idea that a family's identity can be made up of many different combinations, not just a two parent home with everyone the same race.

This book is also great for a child who may be upset because he or she will become an older sibling. This book shows that before the baby is born, everyone will talk about it because it is an exciting thing to happen, but it also tells the reader that once the baby is born, the family's size will be different, but everyone will be loved the same and life will go on.

I would give pecan baby pie 2 .5 stars.

The plot of this book is that the mom and her daughter Gia have the same love for this pecan pie. Gia thinks when her mom has her new born baby soon the baby is going to be a copycat and love pecan pie to which is likely to be true.

The setting in the book mostly takes place in their house. I think it does because the they are having all of their memories in the house. One memory they had was when they were going through Gia's old clothes to pass on to her newborn sister.

A couple things I liked about the book was that the main characters are African American which makes me feel good about myself. Another thing I liked was that the daughter's name was Gia which is really close to mine .

My favorite part of the book was when Gia and her mom are going through her clothes to see what she wants to pass on to her newborn sister and I liked this part because they were having fun and she said it felt like she was playing dress up and it was cute to me.

A couple things I didn't like was the writing is everywhere on the page so I got confused on what I should have been reading. Also I didn't like the drawings because they looked like they tried to hard to make the people look real, but I give them a hand for trying. They did better than me.
My favorite character in the book was Gia because I knew more about her than anyone else in the book and they really didn't describe anyone else.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves food or likes books about a mother and her daughter.

I don't think this book is related to African-American literature because it doesn't talk about African-American literature at all.

A mother and her young daughter, Gia, prepare for a new baby to arrive. Gia tires of everyone talking about the baby, but she knows one thing: the "ding-dang" baby will love pecan pie, just like Gia and her mother. Gia grows frustrated, but her mother reminds her of how much she will miss the life they lived before the baby. Gia, as an older sister, will have to tell the baby all about those good old days, perhaps over a piece of pecan pie. Children ages 3-6, especially those expecting a new baby, will find cozy comfort in this book about becoming an older sister.

Gia smiled as she held up one of last winter's dresses over her outfit. Ooops, she had definitely grown and it was time to give it away, but her mother wanted to keep it. No doubt Mama was going to start to talk about that "ding-dang baby" that was on her way. Forget it, she didn't want anything to do with it. Gia wistfully turned her head as her mother said the baby would probably arrive "by the time the first snow's on the ground." Waaaah! She crossed her fingers and wished that there wouldn't be any snow during the winter.

One thing for sure, Gia's Mama claimed, that "This baby sure loves itself some pecan pie. It's wanting some right now." Gia loved it too, but decided that ding-dang baby was nothing more than a copycat. Her friends talked about that baby at school. Her friend Micaela talked about that baby during their sleepover, her aunties talked about that baby during her special tea time, and even during circle time her "teacher read a book about a girl who was going to become a big sister." Why did everyone have to talk about that ding-dang pecan pie baby? Didn't anyone like Gia anymore?

This is a wonderfully touching story of Gia, a little girl who didn't want a new sister. Gia was very tentative and insecure about the change that was about to take place in her life. Many children don't like change and having a new sibling, especially after being an only child for some time, can be very upsetting. This tale is very comforting, reassuring, and shows the young child how change can be exciting. It is realistic and shows the negative emotions that Gia is feeling, while not minimizing. The artwork captures the subtle nuances of Gia's emotions perfectly. This would be an excellent read and discuss book for circle or storytime or for an only child with a sibling on the way.
