This review is from: Peculiar Hole in the Sky (Audio CD)
Basically, I bought this just to hear what Bon Scott sounded like before he joined AC/DC and not because I was looking for a good CD. It took me reading 3 AC/DC books before curiosity finally won out and I decided to spend money to get this.
With this compilation, you get a mainstream 60's pop sound, something like a cross between the Monkeys and The Mamas And The Papas-but a bit subpar to either of those bands. Lovegrove, definitely the main vocalist, is going for a Paul McCartney clone sound sometimes, and really fits the role and image that the band is trying to acheive. Bon is more like a secondary vocalist, and there are just a few points where you can clearly make out his voice.
But, by golly, it truly is good ole' Bon, and you'll laugh at this when you think of the Bon that comes out years later during his time with AC/DC. (I'm assuming that if you've come this far, that you're pretty familiar with that.) He would have been about 20 or 21 at the time of these recordings.
So, why get this? It's just a short-lived sixties Australian pop band which charted with some songs in their home country but still wasn't huge even there. Maybe you'll buy it, if you actually do, for some really esoteric reason, like for pre-AC/DC Bon, or for your doctoral thesis on the sixties Australian music scene, or whatever. I'd never spin this for its own sake, but I'll probably keep it because every once in awhile I just might get curious again. Or, I might want to be tickled sometime by the clean-cut nice boy sort of image Bon was participating in here.
I'm not really trying to say that it's good or bad with this review, per se, so I gave it 4 stars just because that's the most neutral star rating.
