5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful album! Love it!, March 29, 2001
This review is from: Peculiar Situation (Audio CD)
Judging from the other reviews, it doesn't seem that we are all listening to the same CD! This is pure Earl. It's like he went away for a while and then came back. He was hanging in really well for a while and then it started to sound like he was tired with his own style. Judging from this outing, it's clear that he's got himself back. Basically, every listener is looking for something different & I've learned to read these reviews, but understand that they are ENTIRELY subjective and may or may not reflect my own taste in music. Basically, listen to some cuts YOURSELF, as Amazon allows you and decide for yourself. I've listened to and chosen some CD's that Amazon reviewers considered to be duds and I've thoroughly enjoyed them! Take this album, I almost didn't buy it. But in the end I did and I could've kicked myself -- it's one of my favourites! It's nice, quiet music in a typical Earl Klugh style and Earl Klugh sound which is rather refreshing these days when you can barely tell one smooth jazz artist apart from another. And, good gracious, he plays almost all of the instruments on many of the songs -- that takes talent, gang! It's quite a feat. My husband is a musician and does thishimself -- it's quite a time consuming project.

So, Amazon, thanks for allowing reviewers to have their say, but thanks even more for allowing us to listen to clips so that we can get an idea of what the album sounds like. Thanks to you reviewers who give your opinions, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mastery of the genre?, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Peculiar Situation (Audio CD)
This CD came as a very nice surprise...in several ways actually. The "smooth jazz", "dinner jazz", "jazz jazz" genre's have been beat to death by a bunch of wimpy, sappy, cheesy-sounding music-crats who crank out their brand of maudlin-jazz that just oozes pure yuch. Oh, they sound good for about 3 minutes then before you know it, their music makes you want to open up the CD player and fling the orb as far as one can. But.......Earl's new CD just hits the mark, song after song. The title is very much appropriate...peculiar situation...it is what I am in...this "jazz" CD brings back the soul and real-ness to the name...just listen to the first four tracks, listen to the guitar, listen to Roberta (you go!) then crank up anyone else.....and you will come back for more.....this is one of the CD's that you will actually want to play the entire set....which is rare in this day and age....Enjoy the tunes....they don't come around this way too often...

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth Stuff So True to Klugh!, November 25, 2000
By
Brian G. Jett, MRC (Lexington, KY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peculiar Situation (Audio CD)
Unlike one superior cynic, I don't hear this CD as "run of the mill." Typically, those who can only run their mouths are "Run-of-the-Mill." After all, any fool can do this, but not just anyone can maintain a successful (what do you call success? sure to be asked) musical career for as long as Earl Klugh has.

The tune with Roberta Flack is great! The other tunes are great too as long as you don't set yourself up for failure by assuming it will be the same. He is one man with his own style. He cannot become George Benson and if he did, we would complain about that wouldn't we? Somewhere there is a win-win in here, and the CD is a win-win.

For most of the constantly critical music lovers, love is not part of their vocabulary. And music? Most can't play a good game of UNO much less an instrument! Keep on Earl! Jett:0)
