2.0 out of 5 stars Got this only because it was free for Kindle
I didn't realize that it was Christian fiction until I started reading it. There are other works of Christian fiction that I like despite being a non-believer (for instance, Alaskan Summer, which was also available free on Kindle a while ago. That was a well written book). This book, on the other hand, was boring & trite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old Friends are Back Again, March 14, 2008
This review is from: Peculiar Treasures (The Katie Weldon Series #1) (Paperback)
Katie Weldon, Christy Miller's best friend, caught the bouquet at Christy's wedding. But wedding bells aren't on their way for her just yet. First she's got to choose a major she wants at college. Then she has to think about accepting an RA position in the dorms. AND then Katie has to wonder about her relationship with Rick Doyle, her not exactly boyfriend because they haven't discussed labels yet. Throughout all these decisions and circumstances, Katie must remember that God is with her at all times, even when she can't figure out what's going on herself.

When I heard that there was going to be a new edition to the Christy Miller saga, I was in 7th heaven. I adored the original Christy Miller books growing up, loved the Sierra saga, and was thrilled to see old friends pop up in Robin Gunn's other two series Glenbrooke and Sisterchicks. I was excited to hear we would finally get to read Katie's story. I had high expectations going into this book and I was not let down at all! All the familiar characters are back and the story picks up right where the last book in the Christy and Todd series left off. Even if this is your first time meeting the gang you won't get lost as all the characters are reintroduced again. Katie is someone most young women can identify with. Personally I thought that Katie is a more dimensional character that Christy was in the previous series. She's more outgoing, outspoken and a risk taker. I really do love her unique way of seeing life such as her accepting Christ was like taking up a dare from God. I also shared her frustration about defining her relationship with Rick yet at the same time I was glad to see how they everything worked out before using labels. This book totally made me miss being in college again and living in the dorms. I miss all the goings ons of dorm life, with staying up late, friends around the corner, and late night fast food runs. If it only didn't have to be ruined by studying! I wish I could have studied at Rancho Corona with Katie as my RA. She sound like she would have been the perfect RA to have, someone you could easily talk to with your problems. There's lots of humor in this book too with Katie's penchant for off beat jokes and wisecracks. It was a refreshing read and I learned quite a bit. I myself have never noticed the peculiar treasures reference in the Bible but after reading this I like seeing myself in that viewpoint. It took me no time at all to finish this book and I was sad to see it end. I cannot wait to see what happens next in Katie and Rick's relationship. Book 2 cannot come out fast enough! HIGHLY recommended!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Katie is wonderful, August 16, 2009
This review is from: Peculiar Treasures (The Katie Weldon Series #1) (Paperback)
Robin Jones Gunn is an amazing and wonderful author! I have grown up on her books and this story was a perfect addition to the Christy Miller series. I was able to relate to Katie and her issues in many ways. I enjoyed reading a story that was set in college years. I learned many new and valuable lessons in reading this story. The verses and bible lessons that the author used opened my eyes to ideas that I had not thought of before. As Katie grew in the Lord, so did I. I am thankful that Mrs. Gunn was able to write another series about there characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!!!

Bought this book for my 19 yr old daughter. She gobbled it up in a night. Now it's making its way around the college dorm. My wife wants to read it, too! I'm buying the entire series as it comes out. Sorry I couldn't give actual details about the author/story, but, I think this series is a winner based upon my daughter's response.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by RJG, July 28, 2008

This review is from: Peculiar Treasures (The Katie Weldon Series #1) (Paperback)
This series begins at Christy's wedding, where the Christy Miller series leaves off, now from best friend Katie Weldon's perspective. Katie is just finishing her junior year at a Bible college. She is overwhelmed by her busy life and the big decisions she needs to make soon, such as whether to take a resident advisor position her senior year, and what to do about her undeclared major. Not the least important, she also is trying to understand her relationship with Rick Doyle, her "almost boyfriend," with whom she has a complicated past.

I found the characters in this book multi-dimensional and easy to relate with. The religious tones are not preachy, and rather refreshing: Katie wasn't raised in a Christian home, and therefore has her own set of Christian truisms that are unique and thought-provoking. Although Katie can be a bit over-dramatic (and maybe over-sensitive) at times, she is a charming character and enjoyable to read. The blending of purity and romance is what makes this novel both beneficial for young readers, and satisfying for all ages. I laughed several times, and cried several times! That is rare for me in reading fictional stories. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!, May 2, 2008
This review is from: Peculiar Treasures (The Katie Weldon Series #1) (Paperback)
I read all the Christy Miller books when I was in high school and when I heard Robin Jones Gunn was writing another book I had to get it. It was such a great book. Robin Jones Gunn does a phenomenal job of making the characters become real. I would highly recommend this book and all other Robin Jones Gunn books.

Peculiar Treasures is Robin Jones Gunn best work yet. I have followed Christy through all the series. Katie always seemed like the girl I wanted to know better. Robin develops her character well, from a teenage girl bopping around, making flippant comments, stating profound "God discoveries", to a young woman still trying to work out the kinks in life. She is very easy to identify with.

I love the illustrations of the backpacking trip, the "wall of kisses," and the melted ice cream. And what is fun for us Christy Miller fans is to continue to follow her life after the college years.

An easy read, great for all of us to see a good christian model!

I almost jumped out of my seat when I saw that this was coming out! I was so excited and happy to see we were finally going to see Katie's story. As the previous reviewer said, I was not disapointed at all! Robin Jones Gunn is a fantastic writer and I have loved her Christy books for years. I cannot wait until the second book comes out, in fact, I pre-ordered it today!
