About the Author

Bob Gluck was born in Des Moines, Iowa but moved, with his mother and dad, to St. Louis, Mo. when he was about a year old. He started learning music at the ripe old age of about 5 years, when his mother (Mildred) took him on her knee and began to show him a little about the guitar. Since Bob's dad (Bob) was a fiddle player in a country band, having music and instruments around the house seemed natural. It seemed as though there were always good musicians around (to get pointers from), and music usually filled the house. The neighbors were over frequently (to listen) while everyone "practiced". During the early teen years, Bob tried several different kinds of music including Rock, Folk, Gospel and Country. He began to make a little money on the weekends playing Country, so that's where he stayed, although he likes and plays several other types of music. While still in St. Louis, he performed with the Lester family Gospel group until his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where his dad found work. While attending college, (Phoenix Community College and later Arizona State University) he sang tenor in the school choir, performed at various school functions, worked as a studio musician and played at local clubs on the weekends. At the age of about 23, Bob was a regular on a local television show that was broadcast once a week, and on a local radio show on Sunday afternoons every week. The television job lasted for about a year until the program was taken off the air. The radio show was on for about a year and a half. During his career Bob has performed on the same shows with various Country artists. He was part of the local bands that led some of these shows off in the Phoenix area. Sometimes he played lead guitar and sometimes it was the pedal steel, and usually he was one of the vocalists. Bob plays Pedal Steel, Lead Guitar. Rhythm Guitar, Banjo, Piano, Autoharp, Dobro and some Fiddle. When he decided that he wanted a double neck guitar, he began to price the instruments and found that they were completely out of his price range. That is when he began to build musical instruments. The very first guitar that he built was a double neck with a standard neck on the bottom and a half scale neck on the top. THE GUITAR CAN BE SEEN ON HIS WEBSITE AT CACTUSPUBLISHINGAZ The half scale neck sounded like a mandolin when played although it was tuned like a guitar. This double is still in his possession and still plays quite well. This guitar took nearly two years to build. There was a lot of experimentation, research, trial and error; Nevertheless the job was completed. Since that first guitar, Bob has built many guitars including arched tops, acoustics, solid body electrics and pedal steels and has sold most of them. The ones he did not sell were given to friends and family. Teaching guitar was one of the areas that he enjoyed most. It was really fun to take someone who knew nothing about guitar and teach them to play. Although Bob has spent most of his life as a Civil Engineer, Civil Designer and draftsman, music remains his first love. In addition to writing books on guitar building, he also taught CAD and specialized in Civil drafting at a private technical school in Phoenix where he lives with his wife of 34 years, whose name is Marty. Bob believes that being a father and a grandfather is one of his greatest accomplishments.

1.0 out of 5 stars Money down the drain..., September 3, 2005

This review is from: Pedal Steel Guitar: Design & Construction (CD-ROM)
This is a big disappointment. Not Mac-compatible, which is not stated anywhere on the disc or sleeve. V-e-r-y slow even on a fast PC, with a messy, un-intuitive interface. Some design suggestions are highly questionable, drawings are non-standard with very few measurements, some are of very poor quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great drawings and plans, December 11, 2005
This review is from: Pedal Steel Guitar: Design & Construction (CD-ROM)
I built a guitar using the drawings and ideas on this CD. The guitar looks great and works perfect. I took the plans for the mechanism to a machine shop and had them made. I really like my guitar. I am considering building a double neck.
