5.0 out of 5 stars Pediatric Anesthesia Book, July 27, 2008
This review is from: Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide (Macksey, Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide) (Spiral-bound)
This book is the BEST pediatric reference book that I have seen. It is designed to be a book for use in the OR and it excels at this. The individual tables are indexed by weight and the exact dosages are listed. It is simply superb and all you need for the peds set-up.

My first rotation with pediatric anesthesia. Very nervous about dosing and having to calculate when under duress and/or in emergency situations. Getting this book was a Godsend... I had everything set up prior to each case and even impressed a few Attendings. Great to have - even as a back up. Some of the dosing was on the conservative side, but overall, all the pediatric anesthesiologists on staff believed that you "couldn't go wrong" with the calculated dosages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Resource!, July 27, 2009
This review is from: Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide (Macksey, Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide) (Spiral-bound)
This is one of the most practical, user-friendly resources available for CRNAs/SRNAs in the OR. It has been a life-saver for me as an SRNA when Pediatric cases were added to my room unexpectantly. It not only provides you with accurate, weight-based doses for the majority of medications you would give a pediatric patient, but it also gives you the calculated milliters for the drugs (check concentrations). Many CRNAs I have worked with have purchased this valuable resource after utilizing my copy. Add this to your OR bag...you will not be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pediatric anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide, November 11, 2008

Good info organized by child's age. It would be more convenient to have the two pages per each age placed so they face each other. That way you could leave the book open without flipping back and forth between pages. Also, the pages aren't laminated so you have to be careful about spills since this is the kind of book you bring into the OR with you and leave on top of your anesthesia cart during your pediatric cases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Calculated ETT sizing is off - be wary, September 9, 2011

I bought this book because I was pleased to find a "weight based" reference that could work well to sit on your tabletop while doing peds cases. The precalculated drug dosages of relevant anesthetic drugs and antibiotics is great. HOWEVER, I'm sorry to say that this book missed the mark when it comes to ETT size suggestions based on kg weight. Better estimate of glottic size (and thus ETT size) is done by age formula not weight-based estimates. This is related to the overall weight increase within the general pediatric population. This book shows weight-based estimates of ETT sizes, which may not apply correctly to the current peds population. (ie. A four year old who is the weight of a typical 6 year old should not have an ETT that is sized for a 6 year old). In practice, we have consistently found these ETT sizes to be too large for this reason. That aside, as any professional would, use your own clinical judgement when utilizing any resource and you will find great value to this handbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for OR set-up and drug doses/calculations, July 11, 2011

This review is from: Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide (Macksey, Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide) (Spiral-bound)
This book is very convenient and easy to use. At the beginning of the book is a list of normal vitals for different age ranges, hemoglobin and crit values, and basic set up for a case, calculating ETT size. Has max doses of locals, volatile agents and MAC consideration, IV fluids. Just flip to how much your pedi patient weighs in KG and it has the doses of the drugs calculated for that weight. Includes the concentration in which the drug is usually supplied, has the doses for just about all top shelf anesthesia drugs already calculated for the patient kilos, and how many MLs to give based on that calculation and concentration.
Does not have pharmacology (mechanism of action, classification, etc). In the back it has a section of "pediatric pearls" with some basics of pediatric physiology, and another section of "common pediatric disease and emergencies" with (croup, omphalocele, facial deformities like Pierre Robin, pyloric stenosis) and major physiologic implications.

Overall, this book is great. I'm a nurse anesthesia student and this is the most popular book for pedi reference in the OR in my program as well as at my hospital (with 40-60 CRNA students at any time). The physiology of this book is pretty basic but a good quick-reference/reminder. Drug calculations and mls to draw up is great (but must be careful when actually drawing up drugs to make sure that the concentration in which the drug is supplied is the same as what the book is using, although the book does use the standard supply of drugs..atropine 1mg/ml, succs 20mg/ml, etc). It won't tell you side effects, contraindications, etc...just the doses, so you still gotta know your stuff!

I have not looked at other pediatric anesthesia reference books, but so far I'm very happy with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive Pediatric Anesthesia pocket guide!, November 25, 2008
By
This review is from: Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide (Macksey, Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide) (Spiral-bound)
I believe that this is the most comprehensive, practical, concise pediatric pocket reference. I carry this valuable tool with me everyday of clinical experience. The book has info about all the possible drugs used in pediatric population, weight based dosages down to 250gm premie baby. I do wish that the font was a little larger for a better view. This pediatric pocket is an excellent pocket reference.
