Book Description

Pediatric Heart Sounds offers in-depth tutorials of specific pediatric heart sounds and a diagnosis of those sounds. A self-assessment option helps the viewer to recognize the audio features of a heart condition as well as how to analyze logically and ‘dissect’ the murmur to improve identification. While the CD contains the multimedia material, the book is designed to provide explanation of the mechanisms involved.

Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews:

“Whether you are learning, reviewing or teaching pediatric cardiac auscultation, you need to take a good look (and listen to) Pediatric Heart Sounds … . The CD, which accompanies the text, is absolutely fantastic! … it contains well-written chapters in the book and excellent audios on the CD … . I recommend this new book and CD very highly. It is a valuable educational tool.” (John W. Moore, Congenital Cardiology Today, January, 2009)

From the Back Cover

There is, even now, no other basic physical examination skill is more important than cardiac auscultation. When a patient presents with a soft systolic murmur on auscultation, only good physical examination skills will allow the examiner to reassure the patient that the murmur is non-pathologic.

This book and CD ROM is not an exhaustive "encyclopedia" listing every possible abnormal sound with the appropriate clinical response. Instead, the goal is to increase the reader’s confidence using the stethoscope in an organized fashion, and once they have the organized system of auscultation, to improve their ability to tell pathologic from normal heart sounds. To further enhance the learning experience, all cardiac sounds on the CD ROM were recorded from patients with the specific cardiac abnormalities listed, and the specific pathology was confirmed using echocardiography.

The CD ROM forces the reader to evaluate all aspects of the cardiac examination from abnormalities of precordial activity to the first and second heart sounds. It has been designed for all trainees in the art of auscultation, from students through to more experienced internal medicine and primary care clinicians requiring a brush up on the techniques. Intensive instruction, followed by reexamining patients with known lesions, improves diagnostic accuracy. This book and CD ROM helps in this learning process

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent tool for learning your heart sounds., February 7, 2010
This review is from: Pediatric Heart Sounds (Hardcover)
Pediatric Heart Sounds is a excellent resource for residents or medical student starting their cardiology rotation as it teaches you how to listen and differentiate the heart sounds and murmur in a very organized and systematic fashion. The book is a combination of text and a CDROM which uses real heart sounds and thus is very understandable. It will make you very comfortable doing a cardiac exam and differentiating normal and pathologic heart sound. I highly recommend this easy to read and interactive book for all the residents and medical students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for medical students and residents on cardiology rotations, November 7, 2008
By
This review is from: Pediatric Heart Sounds (Hardcover)
This book is an excellent resource for both medical students and residents on their cardiology rotations. The accompanying CD contains a recorded heart sounds tutorial, with respiration over the heart sounds, and is more realistic and lifelike than others of its kind. There is a quiz on the CD so that you can test your listening skills following the tutorial. The book and CD together teach you how to listen to the heart in a methodical way and to listen for each sound separately instead of immediately jumping to a conclusion about the diagnosis. You learn how to listen for S1 then S2, then extra heart sounds, then murmurs, etc. Then you put it all together and come up with a diagnosis. The book and CD do an excellent job teaching how to differentiate between normal innocent murmurs and pathologic murmurs. Overall I think students, residents, residency programs and medical schools should have this resource available and use it prior to and during the cardiology rotation for improved learning.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought the kindle version and it turns out that the Pediatric Heart Sounds comes without any sound!!!!
Why would anyone buy a book about heart sounds if they send you a version that does not have the sound files!!!
I wish I could return it but I guess I have been robbed.
