Book Description

This valuable reference work bridges the gap between nutrition research and its practical application to children with developmental and chronic disorders. After reviewing prenatal and postnatal growth, and the evaluation of nutritional status, the authors provide succinct accounts of a wide range of pediatric disorders that present special nutritional problems. Each chapter is organized to cover biochemical and clinical abnormalities, techniques in nutrition evaluation, nutritional management, and follow-up procedures. Among the diverse conditions covered in this volume are neurogenetic disorders, behavioral disorders, drug toxicity, obesity, cancer, diabetes, and inborn errors of metabolism. A companion study guide is available from the author, "Nutrition for Special Health Care Needs, Children-Adults." This self-study guide contains multiple choice questions and includes case studies. Contact the author at 549 Tohatchi Dr., Cincinnati, OH 45215 (513-522-1403). 35CEhrs.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A comprehensive collection of chapters that address diverse nutrition topics of children with special care needs....An impressive interdisciplinary panel of experts contributed to bridging the gap that currently exists between nutrition research and its practical application to a pediatric population with chronic diseases and developmental disorders....The result is an excellent reference for a wide range of health providers in clinical and community-based settings and graduate students.... The text includes excellent visuals, assessment tools, and resources such as financing of nutrition services, standards of quality assurance, and protocols of care, all of which are invaluable to providers delivering health and nutrition care to children with special needs."-- Catherine Cowell, Topics in Clinical Nutrition

"Packed with information that is useful on a daily basis. . . . details can b e quickly and easily found. This book will be useful for all who care for children with handicaps and chronic disease. I recommend [it] without reservations and with enthusiasm." --Journal of Parental and Enteral Nutrition

"One of the great strengths of this book is that each chapter has an introductory section that gives an excellent description of the clinical disorder and its biologic and molecular basis. . . . Another strength is the emphasis on team care, which is essential because of the complexity of the problem affecting the child and the family when the child has a chronic illness. . . . this is a most valuable book. The extensive appendices contain information that is otherwise difficult to find. This book should be in the library of every pediatric nutritionist and every clinic where children with chronic disease are cared for." -- William B. Weil, M.D. New England Journal of Medicine

"The information presented is well organized, comprehensive, and user friendly. References and Appendices are abundant and practical. This text is an excellent reference for pediatric practitioners and an excellent addition to any library." --L.J. Benson Szekely, MS, RD, LD (University Hospitals of Cleveland), American Dietetic Association; Pediatric Newsletter

"The goal of this text is to serve as a resource that 'spans the void between nutrition research and its practical application to children with chronic diseases and developmental disorders.' It is aimed at a wide range of health professionals and addresses both preventive nutrition and nutritional therapy. . . . This extremely well-referenced, broad -based text would be an excellent addition to a university or departmental medical library. General pediatricians will use the text for specific information on a specific condition and all individuals who care for the chronically ill will find it a welcome resource."--Diane Bloomfield,Montefiore Medical Center, N.Y., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

"This comprehensive volume does provide useful information and will become a standard on the reference bookshelves of clinicians who deal with children with developmental disabilities and chronic diseases." --Cristine M. Trahms, MS, RD, University of Washington, Seattle, Journal of the American Dietetic Association

"As yet another example of her expert knowledge in the field of pediatric nutrition, Shirley Walberg Ekvall's textbook contribution is a `must-have' for any child health care provider....The extensive references at the end of each chapter provide excellent sources for further investigation. The inclusion of nutritional recommendations for less common diseases...adds a level of depth to the text not seen in previous pediatric nutrition books. This thoroughness follows through to the appendices....I find the book a very worthwhile text. It provides valuable, practical information for clinical nutritionists as well as other health professionals caring for children with special needs." --Katherine K. Pfeiffer, MS, RD, CNSD, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Journal of Nutrition Education

"This text is a valuable and comprehensive reference for pediatricians, nutritionists, developmental specialists and other health care professionals who treat chilren with chronic diseases that necessitate preventive and therapeutic intervention...this book is written in an easy to read style and its content is up to date. Tables and illustrations strengthen and presentation of the information to the reader. References include current as well as classical articles. The index is comprehensive, logical, and easy to use...it is a good and helpful reference for health care professional looking for updated and concise information on nutrition management of specific chronic diseases."-- Oussama Itani, MD, University of Cincinnati Medical Center

"Immense value....excellent value"--K.R. Kamath, Ecology of Food and Nutrition

"Excellent. Most current box on nutrition in pediatric chronic disorders."--Verna M. Baker, Onchita Baptist University

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent text for RD's who work with disabled children, March 25, 1998

This review is from: Pediatric Nutrition in Chronic Diseases and Developmental Disorders: Prevention, Assessment, and Treatment (Hardcover)
A practical review of growth and nutrition for children with disabilities. Significant space is dedicated to nutritional evaluation in the beginning of the text. This is followed by many chapters for specific conditions that are found in the developmentally disabled pediatric population. The Appendices cover (but are not limited to) the RDA's and the RNI's, several condition specific growth charts, sample records and protocols, and quality assurance standards. If you work with this population you should have access to the Ekvall text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Book for RD's, January 19, 2007

This review is from: Pediatric Nutrition in Chronic Diseases and Developmental Disorders: Prevention, Assessment, and Treatment (Hardcover)
I found this book to be the most comprehensive compulation that I have come across in a long time. It was facinating. My fiends were laughing at me for reading it nightly before I went to bed. Then again I am a dietitian to the core. The chapters were full of facts you just can't find anywhere. The charts and appendicies were equally helpful. As a dietitian for Early Intervention is is nice to have ONE book you can look to for information about some of these really rare metabolic disorders.
The author was readily available to answer any question.
