Editorial Reviews

Review

"Spinelli deftly portrays his years as a chubby, awkward adolescent and the complexity of his reaction to the molestation. Spinelli's refreshing honesty as a protagonist make this memoir an important testament to a reality that is too often concealed by shame or fear." - Publishers Weekly

"Intensely bracing reading...an engrossing memoir about overcoming childhood sexual trauma." - Kirkus Reviews

I read the book and had mixed feelings at first, but then I read the book remembering the times and culture of the times. I was amazed at the meticulous details of such a traumatic experience. As a Gay man, but also a teacher and someone involved in investigating child sexual abuse, Frank Spinelli puts a personal voice to a topic that has only been only written about in clinical terms. At the same time there are other aspects of his writing that puts the reader at ease. He speaks candidly about his own life experiences. In the beginning chapter, I thought I was reading about sex and the city of young Gay man. He brings the reader slowly into the topic, and just hints at sexual abuse, but then when he recalls his failing grade in college, and vividly describes his experience in college, he pulls the you into a serious topic. Readers will think, when he relates how his family tries to toughen him up that this cruel, but at the same time I remember the same experiences, and then your heart breaks as he recounts the events of the bullying and sexual abuse he suffered, mixed emotions , one of anger and the other deep sorrow, but it is amazing how he takes a situation, which many children, who experienced the same, as a survivor; he confronts his abuser, finds love, and triumphs. However at the same time you are educated about how a Catholic Church affiliated organization, tries to keep it quiet. They have been trapped. Altar boys are called for immediate meetings, tough kids, who persecuted him, calling him a queer, are the victims, but not Frank. All these events are recalled as he reads a book about Officer Fox, tracks him down and works with authorities, as present day victims come forth, and Fox is put in jail. As a writer he masterfully uses the skill of stream of consciousness.Read more ›

Disclaimer: I know Frank (the author) and that is really the only reason I read this in the first place. My reading options fall more in the urban fantasy genre. And yet, I found myself unable to put this down.

I've read books by friends before and while many have been good, there are few that I would highly recommend. Frank's very personal and shockingly open account of his childhood and adult life was really engaging. Although the circumstances of his life were very different than mine, he managed to write about them in a way that allowed me to connect with the narrative. It really put me in his shoes and gave me a perspective on abuse and its real consequences.

Don't get me wrong... this is not a "fun" read. The subject matter is disturbing and he does not shy away from the dark details. But it is very well written and infused with just enough personality to make it feel like a real story without drifting into "after school special" territory. At times it was hard to reconcile his truth with the man I've known for more than a decade, but at the same time it he was clearly sharing who he is.

I think the story is very interesting having faced abuse before myself. I was drawn to the feelings and core of strength that the author probably didn't know he had at least in his past. However, I'm seeing one piece of detailed dialogue after another in this book. I have an excellent memory (remember all the names and faces of every teacher I had, remember the shag carpeting of the apartment my parents had when I was only able to crawl, etc) and I highly doubt that the author remembered every little thing someone said in a single conversation. Maybe he put lots of conversations together into one for space saving reasons or he just made up stuff where there were gaps. I don't really know, it just had me rolling my eyes at times. I am extremely happy this book was written and that it speaks not only to the abused but also the gay community. I am pleased to have bought Pee Shy and would recommend it to others.

I'll add my 5 Star Rating to all the many others. Amazing feat, to tell such a harrowing story with unblinking candor, but in a way that is immensely readable . There are no manipulative pleas for pity, nor a bitter case for reprisal. It's a rigorously honest work, told by a narrator the reader grows to enjoy spending time with. Well done!

An interesting account of a gay doctor who became obsessed in finding toe person who molested him at age eleven, As I read he book I couldn't help but wonder how he kept this medical practice going while searching for the perpetrator of his abuse some thirty years earlier.

After reading Frank's astonishing memoir, I commend him for his bravery in facing the challenges he did, putting them into perspective as an adult and moving on to a highly accomplished life both professionally and personally, confronting his perpetrator 'Bill', and relentlessly pursuing justice - not just for himself, but for the sake of all the boys 'Bill' ensnared in his deceitful and damaging lair. It might sound strange to say I enjoyed reading his book, as it embodies such awful circumstances. Yet out of his experiences, Frank crafted a brutally honest, raw, heartbreaking yet inspiring read - ultimately compelling and difficult to put down. I am proud to have Frank as a friend. And I am deeply touched by his relationship with his wonderful partner Chad, recounted with such tenderness and heartfelt emotion, told sweetly but without any sugar coating. I thank Frank for sharing his story and congratulate him on such an impressive achievement!
