5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic retrospective on pin up art, December 23, 2008

This review is from: Peek-a-View Pin-up Gallery: Sexy Paintings From The '30s-'60s Vol 1 (Paperback)
This is a volume that is fascinating. It features "pin up" art from World War II through the 1960s. At one time, I am sure, the renderings would have been considered risqué. However, now, there is a sort of innocence about them that juxtaposes with the original "naughtiness" of these.

The volume is almost all drawings, with very little text. The major text, in fact, is on the back cover. Key textual phrasing: "From WW II through the 1960s, pin-up girls endured as classic emblems of coquettish femininity, playful innocence, and wholesome American beauty." Later, the text continues, "The collection celebrates the enduring images of such artists as Elvgren, Armstrong, VeDorss, Frahm, as well as many other pioneers of the pun-up movement."

I found this book lying around the house (don't know where it came from), and found it interesting in its glimpse of an older era. As earlier stated, once such work would have been considered a bit naughty. Today, the art has an innocent look to it. It tells us something of where we once were--and where we have since gone.

The art itself? It is a particular genre and captures a sense of the era in which it was conceived.

Anyhow, if you want a taste of pin-up art, this is an interesting introduction to the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat!, May 4, 2011
This review is from: Peek-a-View Pin-up Gallery: Sexy Paintings From The '30s-'60s Vol 1 (Paperback)
Neat book. The prints are all done on one side, so they're suitable for scanning/framing. The only issue is that the printing is a bit dark.
