Book Description

January 1, 1993
In her second collection of poems, Fleda Brown Jackson holds with a meditative rapture to the place she call home—home as family, the source of trouble and joy; home as the embellished stories of family; and home as a place called Central Lake. And when the poems move outward—to Stonehenge, Edinburgh, Kitty-Hawk, Roanoke, St. Pete Beach, and the Mississippi River—the past keeps resonating. At last, the voice that remembers becomes "nothing but a riding, a hunger." "If I were a swan," she imagines, "The world would move / under me / and I would always be exactly / where I am."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Touching Family Portrait, December 28, 1999

This review is from: Do Not Peel the Birches (Paperback)
Anyone with a family should appreciate Fleda Brown's captivating remembrances. The characters are familiar to all of us: the excentric Aunt Cleone, the fragile mother, the retarded brother. While all family's are not alike, they do all have their "characters," and that is what makes Dr. Brown's work so applicable. A good read for all of us!

4.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful book, January 14, 2000
By
This review is from: Do Not Peel the Birches (Paperback)
Fleda Brown Jackson's poetry touched my heart. I do not have a sister and yet when I shared "Michelle" with my friend Jana and watched tears come to her eyes I knew it was good. I do not own a lake house, yet her intricate glimpses of family at leisure (but still carrying their own unique problems and personalities) spoke to me. I teach AP junior English; I know and appreciate Dickinson, Cummings, and Eliot. I also enjoy the poetry of Ms. Jackson; I can't wait to read her other book.

1.0 out of 5 stars America's Most Boring Book, July 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Do Not Peel the Birches (Paperback)
Nothing captivates me in this book of trite words placed in conjunction to produce an effect. What the author aimed for was the poetic but what she hit was the rump of Morpheous which quickly vented its cloud of sleep upon the reader.
