Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-As a boy walks along a sidewalk, whistling a tune, he sees an egg just beginning to crack open. A yellow duckling soon pops out and utters a "peep!" When the child "peeps" back, the bird becomes imprinted on him and follows him home. The two do everything together, watching TV, playing soccer, and even going to school. When autumn comes, the now-grown duck sees a flock of fellow birds winging south and exchanges its trademark "peep" for a "quack." Sadly, the boy realizes he must say good-bye to his friend. This nearly wordless picture book ends on an upbeat note when the youngster, out walking again, hears a "mew" and finds a new companion. The flat, full-bleed illustrations have well-defined lines, and the art conveys a lot of feeling in its simplicity. The somber colors suit the tale, which is both bittersweet and heartwarming.

From Booklist

PreS. Luthardt does a lot with a little in this delightful book starring a little duck. A "peep" is heard when a young boy finds an egg and watches it crack open, and the duckling inside continues to say "peep" as he follows the boy home. Soon the duck is watching TV, and he is peep-peeping as the boy plays soccer. But one autumn day, the boy and the duck see other ducks in flight, and suddenly, instead of "peep," there is "quack." It's time to let the duck go, and the bird seems happy with his new friends at the pond. The boy is sad though--until he hears "mew." The nearly wordless text (pretty much reduced to "peep" and "quack") is neatly set on pages of sturdy artwork that emphasizes shape and strong colors instead of decoration or design. Little ones will have to stretch their brains a bit to make connections here between facial expressions, actions, and words, but that makes this all the more useful. Ilene Cooper

3.0 out of 5 stars No Dialogue Picture Book with nice illustrations., November 11, 2006
This review is from: Peep! (Hardcover)
Great simple illustrations. The only words that appear in this book are those from the little duckling, 'peep' and the surprise animal at the end. It is an easy flowing story that would be great for a young classroom to be able to write their own words and captions for each page.

This book is about a duck who is born and finds a friend. They do everything together until the duck hears and sees other ducks. The boy realizes that he must let the duck be with his kind and brings him to a nearby pond. The boy begins missing him. He mopes. At the end of the story, he finds another friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adorable New Children's Book for Young Readers, October 26, 2004

This review is from: Peep! (Hardcover)
One day, a young boy is walking through the park, whistling a jolly tune, when a baby duck pokes his tiny head through the shell which he has just hatched from. The boy is mesmerized by the young duck, and they soon become great friends, sharing everything with each other. However, fall is quickly approaching, and the young duck has grown up. His voice is no longer a "peep!" but rather a "quack!" And as a flock of his feathered friends fly by, the little duck is forced to make a very hard decision. Staying with his friend, or going with his flock.

Luthardt's PEEP! features everything that a very young child will enjoy when reading a book: colorful illustrations, and very easy words which are scattered throughout the pages. Young readers will find themselves able to read the story themselves, as there aren't many words, and children who have not quite begun reading yet will be able to decipher what is going on in the story, for the illustrations are quite self-explanatory. Overall, this is an adorable new children's book that will be greatly enjoyed by all.
