Editorial Reviews

Set in and around a pond, a bush, and a tin can, follow a newly hatched chicken named Peep, and his friends Chirp and Quack (a robin and a duck), on their daily adventures. They live in a place of great wonder and mystery, a place they are forever eager to explore, a place they call "the big wide world." Celebrate being curious, being adventurous, and, for at least one character, being a duck.

Our son loves it, and our daughter is almost 7 and still loves it.
S. Landborne
And as usual, each episode ends with real children exploring and experimenting in ways that reflect the lessons learned by Peep, Chirp and Quack.
Dienne
Quack is a bit narcissistic, peep a bit naive and chirp a bit sarcastic.
S. Wilson

Ever since my daughters discovered Peep and the Big Wide World at the library, I've been addicted and I can't get enough. The fact that my daughters are so into it is just a bonus - I'd buy every new video even if they didn't like it.

If you aren't already familiar with the series, it follows Peep the chick and Chirp the flightless robin, both young orphaned birds who have become attached to themselves and Quack the duck. Peep is naïve, trusting and curious about everything. Chirp is also curious and easily excitable, but also shrewder and more cynical than Peep. And then there's Quack. Quack is a loud, annoying, self-centered know-it-all who really doesn't know much, but somehow he's still just plain lovable. Together the three friends, along with other animal friends and narrator Joan Cusack, have a chemistry that's just pitch perfect for humorous lessons on science and friendship, as the three birds discover and explore the Big Wide World and learn about science, nature and friendship.

This new DVD contains eight side-splitting episodes. Quack learns what happens when you save a slice of bread for a rainy day. Next he sets about quieting everyone and everything because ducks need absolute silence to sleep. And if they don't get enough sleep, well, they get a little bossy. Then Chirp develops a case of obsessive-compulsive disorder as she tries to sort her growing collection of things into appropriate piles. Should Quack be in the "blue things" pile or the "blobby things" one?

Perhaps the two funniest episodes are "Hear, Here", in which Quack searches for a location in which to give a concert, and "The Lurmies Are Coming", in which Quack warns of an invasion of creatures that are 50 feet long. Well, more or less.

We discovered "Peep and the Big Wide World" several years ago as part of Ready, Set, Learn on TLC when our daughter was a toddler. Since then, we've gotten rid of cable--even though I don't know if Peep is even still on TV--but we wanted to share the world of Peep with our son once he got old enough. We bought all the DVDs that were available a few years ago, so we were really excited to see more episodes available! Our son loves it, and our daughter is almost 7 and still loves it. It's so much better than some of the stuff that's on TV for kids now--Disney, especially. And the best part is that we actually get a kick out of it, too, so it's not a horrible thing to deal with like some kids' shows are. It's always in the DVD player in our van, so whenever we go on a trip, our kids enjoy Peep and barely notice how many hours we're on the road. It's great!
