1.0 out of 5 stars Sex, lies, and videotape = very bad movie, September 25, 2003
This review is from: The Peeping (DVD)
Somewhere along the line, someone thought a Taiwanese political sex scandal would make a great piece of cinematic art. Well, despite being inspired by a true story, this is the most contrived piece of, dare I say, filmmaking I've seen in awhile. Nothing is good or even good-looking. The movie traces the rise and fall of a politician (Teresa Mak) who unwittingly has her sex life taped by a Hong Kong private eye (Daniel Wu) who, in turn, has been hired by someone out to get the her....or so we think. There's a lot of backstabbing involving other politicians, secret lovers, and generally nasty associates, which is fine because almost every character is despicable in some way. That leaves little room for sympathy but, apparently, a LOT of room for nudity; all the action is either an excuse to get undressed or to watch someone get undressed. (Don't get excited though, you never see anything.)

Daniel Wu, who had been warming up the Hong Kong market with his sensitive, nice guy portrayals, takes a gamble with this role and loses it all, literally. He does master the all-important skills of staring really hard into a video screen and of gulping at the sight of female skin. If you're set on buying a Cat. III (NC-17) film, I suggest searching out a more highbrow one. Nevertheless, this movie has found its way into many a guy's dorm room, so buy it if you must.

This movie, 'The Peeping' is not as bad as some reviews would have you believe. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and think Theresa Mak is worth the viewing. See for yourself. The Peeping
