Book Description

Peepo Choo July 13, 2010
They say you cannot choose where and when are born; we are gifted into the worlds are parents are living at the time.  Whether a blessing or a curse, as individuals we must make the most of our environments to advance as best possible given the circumstances present.  For the cast of Peepo Choo, their places of birth, whether they be the suburbs of Tokyo or the South Side of Chicago, appear to be a curse they cannot escape...until they realize the world is a much smaller place than they thought.

On the surface Milton appears to be your average a high school student living in the thugged out streets of Chicago's South Side. As is the case with many teens looks can be deceiving.  When he's not at school or riding the metro, he is at the local comic shop cosplaying as his favorite Japanese animation character Peepo Choo!  A hardcore fan, Milton knows every line from the Peepo Choo animation by heart.  He can happily replicate the Peepo Dance with ease, and genuinely believes the world depicted in this cartoon is "the real" Japan.

On the other side of the Pacific lives Reiko.  A teenage model on the rise, she also has another side of her.  Reiko is a feminist working hard to someday move overseas to a place where she could be treated equally and fairly by men and women.  In Japan, Reiko feels she is a teenage sex object, and after a number of interactions with young Americans in Tokyo she begins to believe that her American dream is going to be painfully similar to her worst Japanese nightmares.

Chance would bring the two teens together. But in this case fate comes in the form of the underworld!

"Now that Smith is producing works for a Japanese audience under the editorial guidelines of Kodansha--doing what Paul Pope in the 1990s ultimately could not do--it's going to be fascinating to see how his already amazing talents change and grow."--Jason Thompson, ComiXology

About the Author

Felipe Smith was born in 1978 in Akron, Ohio.  Raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Felipe comes from the most unlikely of backgrounds for a manga artist published in Japan.  Educated in an international school, while other kids where playing soccer and basketball, Felipe was considered the school's artist.

Upon moving to the US for college, Felipe studied at Chicago's Institute for the Arts where he was exposed to a number of art styles and forms of visual animation.  Influenced early by the hyper-real designs found in Heavy Metal and later on by cartoon styles found in Japanese animation, Felipe's art style is a unique blend of East and West that is destinctively Felipe. Felipe work has been published by IMAGE and TokyoPop; with his first serialized comic MBQ receiving critical acclaim.

Felipe went on to win a number of comic awards, eventually earning him international attention. Now working in Tokyo, Felipe is currently drawing his culture clash-romance for Japan's largest publisher Kodansha in their experiemental comic anthology magazine Morning Two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smith is BACK! But in a whole NEW LEVEL!, October 21, 2010

I just got Peepo Choo Vol. 1. AND I'M JUST LOVING EVERY INCH OF IT! LOVING IT! It's the same guy, Felipe Smith, that made "MBQ"; which you should read! I really love his art and story.

If you read "MBQ", it does have a lot of raunchy stuff in it, as well in Peepo Choo. But the raunchiness in Peepo Choo is really up there compared to MBQ. And when I say "Its really up there", oh boy, Smith really push his limits; by humor, violence, and sex.
As for art, it really pops out, it's all in your face. But, Smith's art has character in it.

As for plot, as always, its something new and different. It's a classic story of "West meets East; East meets West". But, by pop culture view point. What the West see from the East, and what the East see from the West. Yeah, the plot does give the "Finger" to these pop cultures from both sides, but it has meaning to it. Just because the art is very raunchy and the plot does make fun of both pop cultures, but it all has meaning to it. By reading this manga, you can tell Smith really cares about making a good story and having great characters to tell it. So don't let the cover full you.

If you really want to know the man himself that made this manga, here's an interview of him: [...].

If your getting sick and tired of reading the same old manga series, want something new, and want to have an insane ride, read "Peepo Choo"

1.0 out of 5 stars 3p1c Ph41l!!!, July 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Peepo Choo 1 (Paperback)
Was expecting something a little more thoughtful about the differences between the 2 cultures, but instead got this vulgar piece of excrement.

There's way too much appeal to senseless violence and sex. I can enjoy something like Berserk/Blade of the Immortal, where the violence while plenty are at least placed within contexts, but as someone already noted, the violence/sex here just feels out of place.

The humor appeals more to kindergarten, pre-school level intellect. It's not funny, is gross, and plain stupid. If you are looking for a witty, clever humor/satire that's usually more suitable for decent adults you won't find it here.

The art quality is inconsistent. Shows the artist lacks practice and professional experience in the field. While I understand manga is a stylized form of art, it's still based and grounded on a good understanding of human anatomy. Pasting giant circles onto stick figures do not turn them into girls, much less attractive ones. One Piece is butt ugly, but at least the artist managed to keep it consistent so far so he could rightly defend it as being personal style and not flukes. That's not the case with Peepo Choo.

To sum it up, this book is not appropriate for adults because the content is too dumb. It's not appropriate for children because it's ultra-violent and hyper sexualized. It's like an answer to a question none is asking. In one word: EPIC FAIL! Do NOT buy, save your money. If you did, burn it, and save your time.

It's the comic you wished you could have made as a kid. Over the top in the best possible ways.
