Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Peepsqueak doesn’t just hatch slowly like the other chicks; he bursts out of his shell, dressed and ready to go in a red “P.S.” T-shirt. From the instant his feet hit the ground, he is “on the move!” and determined to fly, despite Yellow Ducks and Big Sheep’s warnings that he is too little for such an activity. He jumps—up, up, up!—off a stone wall, a round hill, and a big rock; but, alas, he falls down, down, down each time. Luckily, Old Gray Goose knows just how to solve Peepsqueak’s problems and lifts him airborne on his back—high, high, high. Debut author-illustrator Clark’s sweet cartoon illustrations bring Peepsqueak’s farm to cheerful life, and the simple words repeated throughout are perfect for the intended audience. As an added bonus, a tiny shorts-and-T-shirt-clad mouse is tucked away on most spreads, making for a fun seek-and-find game. Young children will enjoy this read-aloud and relate to the chick’s valiant attempts to prove everybody wrong. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Ann Kelley

The illustrations are bright and colorful, the story is cute and repetitive, making it a good story book for young children and a good reading book for new readers.

In my opinion -- Peepsqueak is a book that all little ones will love, as well as many adults.

I'm a Pre-K teacher always looking for a short, yet funny book to read to my class. When I read "Peepsqueak!", it captured the attention of my students throughout the story. They even clapped at the end! Wow! Highly recommended!

Being in and out of the hospital a lot, I started to get discouraged, feeling like I would never accomplish any of my dreams and the many voices of people telling me to just give up almost convinced me but I kept fighting and now I'm 22 and have accomplished many things. Peepsqueak is a reminder on how no matter how small you may be, if you keep trying you will accomplish great things. You may fall a couple times but if you keep getting back up again you are that closer to your dreams.

I love this book! Little Peepsqueak won't let any of the other farm animals tell him what he can't do. He stays focused, stays on the move, and what do ya know, his dream comes true! This is a staple story at our house. My preschooler has this book memorized. Need I say more?

My little guy is two and a half and loves books. We've read countless books to him and he has a pretty impressive library, so I've definitely developed a particular taste for children's books. Some of them are more catered toward children, which isn't a bad thing, but it's always a delight when I come across a book that we both enjoy. Peepsqueak is one such book.

First off, it must be said that this book is adorable. I loved the rounded, fluffy drawings of Peepsqueak and the other barnyard animals, such as Big Brown Cow. The colors are bright and vibrant and mostly done in a more primary-centric sort of theme. I've noticed that my little guy responds particularly well to books that are brightly colored. He really enjoyed the illustrations in this one and he pointed at the animals and told me what sounds they would make. He also noticed some of the details in the instructions, such as the little yellow flowers that dot the soft, green grass into which Peepsqueak tumbled.

I also really enjoyed the story and its theme of determination, even when met with the skepticism of others. Peepsqueak is determined to fly, and he is not going to let anyone dissuade him. I really like the message of not allowing others to hold you back, to go right ahead and reach for your goals with steely determination. I also like the fact that Peepsqueak tries. I think this is a really valuable lesson for kids, who are often frustrated by not being able to do something on the first attempt. And what happens once Peepsqueak succeeds? He goes on to do another thing his friends try to tell him he can't do!

Are you looking for something other than a chocolate bunny for your little one's Easter basket? If so, then you should purchase Leslie Ann Clark's "Peepsqueak!". This is a lively, fun-to-read story about an indomitable little chick, Peepsqueak.

Active language, repetition of phrasing, and colorful illustrations make this an outstanding read-aloud book. One can engage the younger listener by allowing the child to "help" read as he/she repeats familiar phrasing, such as "He was on the move!" or "Peepsqueak jumped up, Up, UP! And then he fell down, Down, DOWN..." Further, Leslie Ann Clark has incorporated the message that one should never give up with a subtle skill and lack of preaching that is rarely employed in current children's books.

My grandson loves "Peepsqueak!" - no, Grandma couldn't wait to read it to him - and your little one will, too. If you are looking for an outstanding addition to your little one's library - whether as an Easter basket stuffer or not - you should consider this 5-star book.

This is the author's first children's book; she wrote and illustrated it. It's cute and the pictures are bright and colorful. I enjoyed this book and think that young children, maybe from 3-5 would also enjoy it. It's simple to read, and there's repetition, which children love!

My only question is about these lines, "But not Peepsqueak! Because why? He was on the move!" Let me quote the entire first page to put it into perspective:

===

One sunny morning, Peepsqueak popped out of his shell. All the other baby chicks were stretching and yawning. But not Peepsqueak! Because why? He was on the move!

===
Why is there a "because" in there? I think that the book would read easier if after the "But not Peepsqueak! Why not? Because he was on the move!"

That "because" seems to be just hanging there for no reason.

Otherwise, I think it's a cute book.

As an adult, I wasn't that impressed with the story. Boring, repetitive, predictable...and Peepsqueak is awkward to say over and over again. I never really cared about Peepsqueak or rooted for him to succeed, and he never really interacts with other characters. As an inspirational story, I think it fails in that regard. It's all about Peepsqueak trying to fly (which is fine), but in the end it's like the moral of the story is: "If you can't do something for yourself, have someone else do it for you." And once he "succeeds," he's off to something else.

But my son really enjoyed the repetition in the story and getting to participate with the "He was on the move!" lines. The illustrations are simple but very pretty. I just felt the plot-line could have ended better.
