Book Description

November 3, 2006
Peer Abuse Know More! Bullying from a Psychological Perspective takes the problem of bullying to a whole other dimension. As bullying has been a problem since the beginning of time, it has been only recently that society has started to learn about the dangers of it in the schools and workplace. The book begins with a history and update on recent statistics of bullying today. The different types of bullying in adults and children are discussed along with stories shared by many who have lived this nightmare. Also, we learn of the term "Peer Abuse" and how to make the transition from the term bullying and what is behind a name.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unreadable, August 12, 2009
This review is from: Peer Abuse Know More: Bullying From a Psychological Perspective (Paperback)
This book is nearly unreadable. While the content is okay, this book is full of grammatical, spelling, and syntactical errors. There are many who are able to read through these things while overlooking overt grammatical errors, but I cannot, and reading this thing drove me absolutely crazy.

It is clear that nobody edited this book at all. As a mild example, the word "event" was typoed as "even." A few typoes here and there are understandble, but most of the errors I see are not typoes, and the book is full of them. Another example is that the word "except" was written as "accept," which is most likely not a typo; the author most likely fails at grammar. There are so many fragmented and run-on sentences that my head spins. Some of the meaning is completely lost to me as many of the sentences are not formatted properly, and therefore could mean something completely different.

I had to put the book down at about 50 pages in because I could not take anymore. I'm willing to overlook a couple of errors, but I cannot overlook an entire book full of them. I should have realized that the title contained a grammatical error: "Peer Abuse Know More!" There should be a colon after the word "abuse." I unfortunately overlooked that as I thought that there was a specific meaning to the title being spelled out that way.

As I have said, there are many who are able to read these books without letting the massive amounts of grammatical, syntactical, and spelling errors bother them, but I am not one of those people. My grammar may not be perfect, and I extremely doubt it's that good, but I can assure you that this book looks like it was written as a fifth grade essay. I am not an English major; in fact, reading and writing are some of the harder things for me to do as compared to other subjects. I'm more of a mathematical person. So please do not read this review and think that I am a grammar-nazi English student, because I am not.

The content, while good, is something that can be found in other, better-written books. The author does address different types of bullying other than the classic "Give me your lunch money!" type, which is a relief, as some of the bullying I experienced through the present day would not look like bullying to an outsider. However, instead of stating the facts, the author seems to get emotional over certain examples of bullying. While I can't blame her, it almost takes away from the book, as I bought this book for a "psychological perspective."

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this book. There are plenty of other better books on the subject out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peer Abuse Know More: Bullying From a Psychological Perspective, January 19, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Peer Abuse Know More: Bullying From a Psychological Perspective (Paperback)
This book is an excellent primer on the varied types of bullying/peer abuse. It speaks to the long term effects on the victims and empathizes with what they endure. It speaks to the abusers, who are usually in denial over their behavior, and spells out clearly that if you are targeting someone in one of these many ways, you are guilty of abuse.
Ms. Bennet shares sad stories of abuse of varying degrees. She tells us of families who have suffered and have had the strength to use their experience to help others.
Bullying/Peer Abuse is an issue whose time has come. Recent events in the news are the tip of the iceberg of this epidemic. Ms. Bennet's book should be required reading for all educators and probably all children of middle school age. It is step one to gaining the knowledge and ending the abhorent terrorizing of our children that takes place in our neighborhoods and schools. This affliction is widespread and does not limit itself based on socioeconomic status.
Ms. Bennet's bio tells us of her ongoing work to support victims and families. Her experience in this area is a bonus as it helps her to provide the keen insight evident in this book. Thanks to Ms. Bennet for this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking!, November 19, 2006
This review is from: Peer Abuse Know More: Bullying From a Psychological Perspective (Paperback)
This is unlike any other book I've ever read on bullying before. It really sheds light on the bullying epidemic and explores effects on both the bullies and the targets in a way that is long overdue. The author makes no excuses for the bullying epidemic. She is very honest with her treatment of the subject and tells it like it is!

I would recommend it for parents of bullied children as well as for adults who either still have scars from being bullied as children or have been bullied in the workplace as adults.
