4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Start for a Needed Change, August 22, 2000

Jeff Edmondson (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews
The process and skills required for effective mediation are extremely difficult for young and old alike to grasp. It is something that is within each and every one of us, but the skills are often not used with such concentration and purpose. Fred Schrump's Peer Mediation: Conflict Resolution in Schools is an effective means of teaching students peer mediation skills as well as providing students with alternative skills for resolving conflict. The ultimate goal being to replace punitive administrative discipline and empower students to resolve conflicts on their own. Having used this manual to install a peer mediation program in a Washington, DC public high school it has proved invaluable in teaching students the skills of mediation. The six steps are clearly spelled out with charts that enable the students to grasp the flow of the mediation process. The excercises are also very effective at reiterating the specific areas of concentration new to most students. The role plays are extremely helpful to provide meaningful practice before actual situations. All in all the manual provides a clear path toward developing a peer mediation program and should be recommended to all those with limited time, but who recognize the importance of peer mediation in the schools.
