Not for children taller than 45"!!!!, January 10, 2009
My nephew received this from his Grandfather today for his 4th birthday. The first thing we did after removing it from the box was to charge the battery. It comes with a 12v battery and charger. The charger has a light on it to indicate when the battery is fully charged. The light is orange when the battery charge is low and turns to green when fully charged. We got about 2 hours of ride time from a fully charged battery and that was with two kids riding the entire time. It took about 5 hours for the battery to fully recharge.
There are two speeds and reverse capabilities. To keep children from using the faster speed, the gear shifter is equipped with a locking screw device that locks the faster speed. This is great to utilize when your child is first getting used to driving the vehicle. The second faster speed is for more experienced drivers.
One of the major flaws of this vehicle is that the seating area is very cramped for two riders. There is no way that a boy taller than 45" would be comfortable driving or riding in this vehicle. There needs to be some modifications to the design to make more front seat and legroom before I would recommend this to anyone with a child over 4 years of age.
There were some cosmetic modifications made recently because although the directions that came with the vehicle said to apply the mirrored headlamp decals, it did not apply to my vehicle, this vehicle came with realistic looking faux plastic headlamps and reflectors. Not decals! Most of the decals that were supplied were not numbered to match the directions. I had to figure out where the decals went on my own. Following the directions for decal placement would have been a disaster. I would like to see this company make updates to the directions so that they can be used for the updated vehicle design. For one reason or another, they skipped this step.
Thankfully I was not the person who paid for this vehicle, otherwise I would have returned it for one of the ATV or Quad style ride on toys. This way there would not have been a problem with the tight seating and cramped legroom.

Gator, January 12, 2008
The Gator is fun, of course. What kid wouldn't love to drive it? But the information states it's appropriate for a child up to age 8. No way. My 5 1/2 year old can barely fit behind the wheel with the seat all the way back. Disappointing when you invest that much money hoping to have a toy to last for some time.

Great Ride-On Toy but Needs More Safety Features, September 9, 2008
My son received this from his grandparents for 3rd birthday. My son loves tractors and he has a little brother so the two-seat Gator was a perfect choice over some of the other vehicles out there.
It was the hit of the party. My son jumped right on and started riding. After about a week, he had the hang of putting it in reverse and in high and low. It comes with a screw adjustment so that you can leave it as is and it will go 2.5 mph or take the screw out which give you a second gear and allows it to go 5 mph. We took the screw out because it just gave it more power. Our yard is a little bumpy and the Gator would get stuck in the ruts and spin its tires in low gear but in high gear, it zips right along.
My biggest complaint is that it needs a shut-off switch or a key that can be turned off and taken out. (It has a key but it is not functional but is just for play.) The boys can jump on and take off before we've had a chance to buckle them in and put their helmets on. It's also hard to get them to stop and I usually always end up getting my foot run over getting them out because if their foot is still on the pedal then it will run. I really wish it had a key that you could just reach over and turn it off. We completely unhook the battery now so we know they cannot get on and ride without supervision.
The battery is also not very easy to get to. You must remove a screw and snap the front of the machine off to access the battery. It is recommended that you charge the battery immediately after each use so it would be nice if it was more conveniently located. We bought a 2nd battery so we could have one charged up at all times.
Overall, it is a great, fun toy that has plenty of power but I still think it needs a little more safety devices. It would also be nice if the Gator wouldn't start unless the seatbelts were snapped. We have another machine that works that way and it is a nice safety feature.
We are just keeping a very close eye on our boys to ensure that they are always properly secured and have their helmets on. They love this so much that riding their Gator is their favorite thing to do.
