Great Ride-On Toy but Needs More Safety Features,

This review is from: Peg Perego Usa John Deere Gator Hpx (Toy)
My son received this from his grandparents for 3rd birthday. My son loves tractors and he has a little brother so the two-seat Gator was a perfect choice over some of the other vehicles out there.
It was the hit of the party. My son jumped right on and started riding. After about a week, he had the hang of putting it in reverse and in high and low. It comes with a screw adjustment so that you can leave it as is and it will go 2.5 mph or take the screw out which give you a second gear and allows it to go 5 mph. We took the screw out because it just gave it more power. Our yard is a little bumpy and the Gator would get stuck in the ruts and spin its tires in low gear but in high gear, it zips right along. My biggest complaint is that it needs a shut-off switch or a key that can be turned off and taken out. (It has a key but it is not functional but is just for play.) The boys can jump on and take off before we've had a chance to buckle them in and put their helmets on. It's also hard to get them to stop and I usually always end up getting my foot run over getting them out because if their foot is still on the pedal then it will run. I really wish it had a key that you could just reach over and turn it off. We completely unhook the battery now so we know they cannot get on and ride without supervision. The battery is also not very easy to get to. You must remove a screw and snap the front of the machine off to access the battery. It is recommended that you charge the battery immediately after each use so it would be nice if it was more conveniently located. We bought a 2nd battery so we could have one charged up at all times. Overall, it is a great, fun toy that has plenty of power but I still think it needs a little more safety devices. It would also be nice if the Gator wouldn't start unless the seatbelts were snapped. We have another machine that works that way and it is a nice safety feature. We are just keeping a very close eye on our boys to ensure that they are always properly secured and have their helmets on. They love this so much that riding their Gator is their favorite thing to do.

In a nutshell:
Pro's +Powerful, 12v 2-speed - moves (2) 50 lb children (100 lb total) on even ground through grass and over tree branches (w/ governing screw removed) +Two-seater, carries two children seated in front comfortably given the total weight is within reason (<120 lb?) +Included dump bed w/ tailgate, carries rocks, toys, and sometimes another child (warning: children may fall out!) +Braking, the vehicle locks/brakes the tires when the accelerator is fully released +Packaging, smaller pieces shrink wrapped and kept together +Customer Support, responsive +Aesthetics, looks tough for a child's toy Con's -Lack of horn, seriously? -Seat belts, not an absolute necessity but older models had them -Flimsy in places, dump bed tail-gate is very weak and the vehicle floor could be stronger -Instructions, I hope you like pictures because that's all you get. We purchased our Gator at a local brick and mortar for a similar price to Amazon (very popular but the chain shall be the Unnamed). Overall, the product is great. It is a wonderful toy given it has faults - just be cognizant that it is not perfect. I purchased the unit knowing the complaints with the stock battery units. I didn't take a chance and was preemptive in buying another battery. The experience has been positive thus far. Dropping a few extra dollars on an aftermarket battery is a good idea. I went to a local battery specialty store and bought a 12v deep-cycle aftermarket battery (~$40) to replace the OEM. Aftermarkets can be bought cheaper but I settled. You can strip the external OEM battery housing w/ the electrical connector harness and install it directly onto an aftermarket battery of similar size and make (sealed, safe). It was a breeze to install (stock harness uses a spade connector that matches the aftermarket battery) and fits perfectly. My kid was riding it as soon as I put it together as the aftermarket battery was already charged and playtime was over before the battery died (2-3 hours of playtime). The aftermarket charges using the stock charger. The included toy documentation had numerous warning inserts about never letting the battery run dead (which causes permanent damage) and ensuring a 100% charge before first use. That may indicate the battery complaints posted on Amazon involve improper battery usage/recharing. However, the fact that these warnings were printed on inserts (rather than in the instructions) indicates to me that this was something the manufacturer probably added after initial sales. Repeated customer complaints? Make your own judgments. As to battery access issues listed on other reviews this is not a problem. Leave the screw that holds the battery compartment out as there are two strong clips that hold the compartment shut - the screw is unnecessary. Slide out a steel retention bar and just be sure to route the wiring on top of the battery unit before pushing it into the compartment. Slide the bar back in, slap the cover shut. Ride on. The instructions are a particular annoyance - they contain only pictures and sometimes you don't know what you're looking at in a diagram for a few moments. There are no verbal instructions. Be aware there are two sets of instructions - the large main booklet but also a smaller booklet inside the lining of the screw package (tells you which screws go where). I didn't see the screw booklet until after it was assembled. The stock pictures in the instructions/promo materials are sometimes necessary to assemble. This is not a showstopper but it can be aggravating with a 3 year old harassing you to hurry up - "Is it done yet?". The vehicle moves my 43 lb 3 year old and his similarly-weighted cohort without problem. I removed a speed/power governing screw listed in the instructions/on the vehicle - 1st gear is just too weak. The vehicle zips over *even* terrain, bushy grass, and large fallen branches with ease here in the suburbs - YMMV. I can't comment directly on performance with inclines but I'd expect it to operate fine w/ 50-75 lbs uphill on a good battery charge. The dump bed is nice although the tailgate is very weak. Riding in the back is possible but one child did fall out as the plastic surface is very smooth and the tailgate flips open easily. Despite the warnings I'll be putting some friction tape in the bed and probably remove the tailgate - stopping other children from clamoring into the back is an effort in futility. I ran into an issue with the bolts molded into the seating pulling out. This was after screwing some retention knobs to secure the seating. This didn't make the toy unusable but this was not a cheap ride-on - not something you'd want to see. Peg-perego will be replacing the seat without issue. I suggest being very easy on tightening the retention knobs when installing the seating (on the easy end of "hand tight"). Be sure to check if the knob spins and feels "stripped" - it's not the knob that is stripped the bolt is actually loose of the seat molding and needs replaced. The vehicle body itself is flimsy in some areas. The flooring could be a millimeter or so thicker due to pouncing children and the windshield is held on by only two small screws. Replacement parts can be purchased cheap, though. The Gator we purchased does not have seat belts although it is evident that other versions did at some point. I do not believe it is necessary for helmets given the vehicle speed. However, I will be purchasing some nylon straps for seat belts to prevent passengers from getting in/out of the vehicle while moving - that poses a greater danger. My kid and his friends love the Gator and I will probably be adding LED headlights, horn, and tail lights to the unit. Update 06/07/11: The Gator still runs like a charm with the batteries functioning as they did last year. I kept the batteries out of the winter weather and recharged them once/month. The other Power Wheels brand ride-ons that other children have seem to move at about half the speed of the Gator...I'm not sure if the PW's are 6v or 12v or if the batteries were not well cared for. The retention knobs underneath the Gator's seat came undone from vibration (then were lost) but the seat sits in place fine. I plan to fix the seat with a large washer and nut. The Gator rides fine without the retention knobs, though. The tires are wearing but in no danger of needing replacement. This is despite about 4 hours of use per week during warm weather.

John Deere Gator HPX I purchased this for a Christmas present for our grandchildren. They really enjoyed this, it goes fast enough for them and it is large enough for 2 to ride together. The 8 year old drives and the 2 year olds ride with her. Great Fun. Kept the charge and ran strong all afternoon. I read in one of the reviews that the battery did not keep a charge, I didn't have this problem but the instructions leave a lot to be desired. I had to look at the picture on the box to figure out how it went together. It is heavy and sturdy after you get it together. The battery however is hard to access to recharge. Very satisfied and would buy it again.

We just got this put together for spring and the kids LOVE it! They played on it nonstop for 2 hours and 15 mins before the batt died. This is the absolute hands down best ride-on I've bought for them - ever. That includes all the barbie jeeps, corvettes, and wally world specials I've gone through. Let's break it down:
Pros: Very fast in 2nd gear - It'll move it. Put any pets up for their sanity. Battery lasts 2 hours - We had 160 lbs of kids riding this thing for 2 hours and 15 mins before it died. They rode on rocks and rough terrain mixed with grass and smooth stuff and I was very surprised it worked that long. We did charge it for 48 hours before the first run, so maybe that juiced it up nicely. Dump feature - works well but doesn't dump all the way for small things like dirt. Traction - This thing climbs over rocks, grass, dirt, pretty much anything reasonable for a child's toy. Spun out occasionally with only one kid in it but that wasn't a problem because once one played with it they all joined in. Cons: Horrible instructions - Just pictures of screws and general areas of the toy. Best of luck! And the stickers are misnumbered. I think everyone gets different numbers just to mess with you while you're putting stickers on it. Cheap plastic bed with false support - There's a metal bar that runs along the top of the bed that supports it and keeps it from bending when you lean on it or put stuff in the bed. It's not bracketed to anything though and breaks off in the first half hour. Fail. Batter compartment - Way too difficult to pull the battery out. Could have made it much easier. No seat belts - IDK if it's not on the newer version or if they just weren't included, but mine didn't have seatbelts. No biggie since even our 2 yr old can hang on just fine. Turning radius - Turns in about 20 feet of space. Could have halved that and still made it safe for kids. All in all it's a great toy, even if it's got a few flaws. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, though I think I might try the motorcycle battery idea some others suggested for longer battery life. Will report on that later this week!

I bought 2 of these for my 2 boys and they are going nuts over them. They are very good in the grass, better on grass then on asphalt. The price is great at amazon to. A little rubber would be better on the tires but the company has not figured that out yet. The battery has gone a hour so far while in high gear and it should go alot father. My kids have 2 other cars and the Peg Perego motorcycle and by far the Peg Perego products are much better. You also get a 2 year warranty.

The other reviews are accurate and collectively thorough, so just a couple of comments. Yes the instructions could use a LOT of improvement including the decal instructions. As another reviewer noted, anything that requires a screw has a separate set of instructions in the blister pack that's easy to miss. I needed a rubber mallet and wood block backup to install the fendors. The headlight lenses and wheel caps were already installed, even though there were steps in the instructions to do that.
There are two handles on the sides of the bed. The instructions don't at all make it clear where they go so you'll find yourself checking the photos on the brochure or box. The fendors aren't well marked left and right, but if you look carefully there's an "L" and an "R". Also, the slots for the "tail light" lense/reflector go to the rear, again, not clear from the instructions. If you assemble those backwards, you're in for a treat getting them apart. Similarly, the tail light lens only seats correctly if installed properly and that isn't clear from the instructions. The plastic hinge for the bed first requires disassembly (it's molded as one part with break off tabs), not at all clear in the instructions and difficult to do, and is impossible to assemble by hand; I very, very carefully used a block and rubber mallet for disassembly and assembly. The bed hinge pin has a rib on one side that keeps it from falling out once assembled, but you have to force it in. It floats OK once it's assembled. The decals are time consuming but they're strong and until they're really pressed down tight, they're repositionable. The front "Deere" logo had to be trimmed to fit within it's bezeled location. I haven't found the battery compartment to be as frustrating as some seem to, but I also left the screw out. The battery is installed behind the front grill, which is hinged and just drops down. Again, the instructions aren't clear, but there's a plastic catch on each side that's easy enough to open without tools once you understand how it works. Leaving the screw out isn't any kind of compromise I can see. I can change the battery without tools in under a minute. I agree it would be good to have a key switch that was functional, but after use it's easy enough to remove the battery and put it on the charger. I would also have liked a safety flag, but that too is easy enough to install. It took me three hours to open the box, carefully remove the parts and decals from the large blister pack, and assemble the thing including decal installation. The manufacturer recommends an initial battery charge of 18 hours. If the instructions had been more clear an hour or more might have been saved. Other than the bed hinge and fendors the assembly is easy, just frustrating. All the parts were there though and they did all go together. Once assembled, this thing seems much more sturdy than some of the alternatives, especially the cheaper ones and it's definitely large enough for two. The pain of assembly is quickly forgotten.

I love this gator so much, I just purchased my second one. I have 3 boys and the kids ride the gator around the neighborhood, load of their fishing items and go to the pond, plus help with landscaping etc. around the house while loading up the back of the gator. My 2 1/2 year old drives it like a pro. I have been VERY pleased with this gator. It is fun and functional for the kids. I would highly recommend this product to anyone! My boys LOVE this item! From a mother's stand point, it keeps my kids (and the neighbor kids) entertained for hours!

I am a mother of a 3 year old John Deere fan! We live on a farm where there is no such thing as a flat or smooth surface. I was very hesitant to put out this kind of money for something that was sure to get stuck on every rock, twig and stump. We purchased this for my son this Christmas and I am now a believer in Peg Perego! This gator plows right through the roughest of terrain. It has seen mud, rocks, tree branches, small stumps, big hills and has defeated each one! My son adores it! One word of advice - the high gear is fast! Don't switch it until you know your child has control and can steer!

We bought the older version of the John Deere Gator in 2006 for our grandson who was 2. No problem driving it even at that age. Today the Gator is 5 years old and while it has no windshield and several scratches due to "accidents" and kids-who-will-be-kids, it has lasted through another grandson and now a grand-daughter who just turned 2 and just this week started driving it herself. Parents had to buy a second battery to always have one charged and ready for use. The oldest at 7 years still loves to drive it but is starting to get a little big for it. But the 5 year old and 2 year old still love it. We installed immediately the rubber traction bands on the wheels to reduce the noise, save the wear on the tires and also give extra traction while on the grass. We are now on the second set of these having gotten about 3.5 years of life from one set. Only other repair is replacement of one seat belt where the plastic snap was torn from the fabric belt. These are the only repairs/replacements that have been needed.
While expensive toy, it has provided many hours of fun for 5 years and 3 grandchildren

versatile toy for the kids. Don't know how long it will last given our rough terrain, but the kids love to help around the yard, so this is perfect with the bed in the back. Save some money though and order it from Walmart.com they ship to store for free and with tax it's only $338.14.
