This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
We recently purchased this carrier to replace our old Graco carrier (used with our first child). With that carrier, we were never fully satisfied with how securely the car seat was anchored into our car (and we had it installed by our state troopers). Also, our son's head was never held securely in place. With the Primo Viaggio, the baby is as snug as a bug in a rug. As it is somewhat heavier than other carriers, it does seem to be more secure (certainly more so than our Graco carrier), and the HALO head supports really hold the baby's head in place. As for the reviewers who are complaining about how quickly their children are outgrowing the carrier, I am a bit bewlidered because, almost universally, carriers hold children up to 20 lbs./26 inches. The growth rate of a child couldn't have less to do with the performance of a car seat. In any event, we are thrilled with the carrier and love that we can use it in both our Peg Perego Pliko and Tender XL strollers.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST INFANT SEAT THERE IS !!!, June 3, 2003
By
Michele (Jamison, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
We have been using this seat for a year now (baby just turned one year) and its finally time to move him to a infant/toddler car seat. We have been very lucky with our baby to get such use out of this seat. He is actually still within the weight limit. From the start this seat has been the best. This is our third child so we been through quite a few and were never happy with them. Bringing him home from the hospital was actually pretty easy in this seat. I felt he was very safe on the ride home and felt that he was also very comfortable. It was also very easy to get him situated in the seat and to hook in in our truck. Our baby has really loved his seat from the start. He would actually be sleeping in this seat before we even put him in the car. That made those short few newborn months alot easier on all of us in the car. The seat is also made out of a very nice material and is charcoal and light gray. We have the matching perego atlantico stroller and the venezia carriage stroller and this fits in both strollers perfect. Just take the seat out of the car and right into the stroller. The baby stays asleep and the family can get some shopping done. I have also taken the cover off about every 2 to 3 weeks to wash it and it still looks new. The seat also fits great in shopping carts! That is very important because some seats give you trouble. Overall, We feel this is the safest and nicest looking seat out there and will miss using it. We look forward to purchasing this seat again for our next baby! I hope this helped with your decision . You and your baby will love it..... And Peg Perego Thank you, for another safe beautiful baby product!!!!

This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
I have worked at a large baby retailer for a year now and everyone of my co-workers and my family members knows that I take my job very seriously. I spend tons and tons of time both at work and off the job researching the items that I sell so that I can tell each and every guest of my store everything they need to know about the products they are looking for. Here are some facts about the primo viaggio and also some opinions that I have gathered over the last year.
1) The primo Viaggio is currently #2 for safety in infant carriers, not #1 as several reviewers have stated. The Graco snugride has been #1 for the last 2 years plus.
2) The Primo Viaggio can NOT be taken on an aircraft without the base being with it. If you try to get on an airplane with it, you will not be allowed to board without first getting the base or checking in the carrier. This holds true with cars as well, you cant put it in a car without a base.
3) It is not really the heaviest infant carrier on the market. It only weighs 9lbs without the base and most carriers weight from 8 to 10 lbs with the exception of most cosco carriers which usually weigh between 11 and 13 lbs.
4) The car seat shade really is as bad as people say. It does not cover more than 3 inches of the car seat and allows tons of sunlight to directly hit your child. You dont want to have to put sunshades up on every window, especially since the only ones that are guarenteed to not harm your baby in a crash are the suction cup only type or the static cling sort. Neither of these will work very well if you live in a very hot place such as Arizona. Children under 6 months of age are not supposed to be exposed to direct sunlight but living in a sunny place, that is impossible without a pivoting car seat shade.
5) I know that many people recommend the primo viaggio because it feels sturdier and safer than the others on the market, but just because you feel something is the safest does not mean that it is. Do your research before deciding what is safest.
6) Children truely do out grow this car seat before most others. It says 26inches/20lbs like all the others but because of the way it is made, most babies no longer fit in it at about 17 lbs. Lenghth wise, it will last just as long as the others but once the baby gets so wide, they no longer fit comfortably in it. The nature of it does make it easy for a tiny baby to snuggle in but you can acheive the same affect using roled up recieving blankets in any other brand carrier, which by the way is an approved method recommended by the highway safety patrol, safer than even the headrest that is sold with the carseats.
make sure you do your homework before you buy an infant carrier. Do not buy one just because your friend told you which one to choose. It is human nature to think that what we have is the best so chances are that your friends who have these car seats will tell you that it is the best when what they dont know is that you can get the same features in another brand as well. For your own sake, allow your friends to give advice but come to your own conclusions about what to use for you and your baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this car seat!, March 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
I am very happy with this product. It is light weight and works great with the Pliko Matic stroller. It is definitely designed with safety in mind and the fabric is so nice for baby It does cost more $$ then some of the others but after doing lots of research I personally found this to be a great seat. I know the snugride by Graco is also good but I did not like the material and thought some of them were bulky and slightly flimsy. I have heard people complain about Peg Pergeo products and I guess you can't please everyone. I believe nothing is perfect but this comes pretty close. Also the picture here does not do its justice although looks which are one of the purks of Peg Perego it is not the most important asset of this seat, safety and comfort are.

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel like doing a commercial for them!, April 21, 2005

On the day of my son's one month check-up, we were driving 65 mph down the highway when a passing car hydroplaned and slammed into us. After spinning across three lanes of traffic, twice, and ending up smashed into the cement median, my newborn was TOTALLY UNHARMED! (We totalled a volvo...not easy to do!) Is this not the true test of a car seat? My future children will ALL be in Peg Perego car seats! Its superior safety trumps all other concerns!

Other notes: NOT all that difficult to put together; my son has never objected to being strapped in and falls asleep readily (he did beautifully on a 40 hour road trip!); it fits into the stroller beautifully...it rocks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pricey, But For a Good Reason!, July 26, 2004
This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
We bought this car seat after much research and purchasing the Peg Perego Pliko P3 Classico stroller in Black Sable.
I have heard that this is the safest infant car seat in the world, I can't factually back it up but I have to agree, that from our personal use it is very very safe, sturdy, attractive and most importantly, comfortable for our infant son.

I've read several reviews of babies sweating due to the Peg fabrics.
My son, now 6 months sweats in any car seat. He also sweats from his head when I rock him, or when he is laying in his bed sleeping. I think this sweat issue can be chalked up to the fact that some babies just sweat. Our home is kept at a cooler 73 degrees and he still sweats from his head.

I've also read that this seat is small. So many people are shocked when their babies outgrow the infant seat. This is normal. This seat, like every other infant carrier is desiged to fit a baby UP TO 26 inches and 20 pounds. Some babies reach either the height or weight limit, or even both fairly quickly.
Our son is 6 months and we just found out he is 26.5 inches and 18 pounds, much like our daughter at 6 months, he is being moved to a Britax seat.

We have found this seat to be extremely well made, very light-as it is one of, if not the lightest car seat available.
It looks very attractive and will fit your baby very well right from birth. We have 6-7 pound babies and this seat did fit our son extremely well, great head support and comfort right from birth versus our daughter's Evenflo travel system's seat.

Now at 18 pounds, he still fits very well even though into the size limits, which some people don't realize, is when you MUST buy a convertible car seat for your child! It drives us nuts to see a huge baby in an infant seat-they're made for small babies and convenience, not to carry you through the first year and then some, well, unless your baby fits into the size guidelines.

If I have to choose one feature on this seat that can and should be improved upon, it'd have to be the sun canopy-it works well for us because our vehicles have dark tinted glass, but on occassion, it would be nice to have something that covers just a teeny bit more. Not something that would keep me from buying this again, but worth being noted.

We did remove the buckle guard at baby's crotch, it was just more in the way and well, the thick diapers tend to keep it from bothering baby anyhow.
The strap covers are nice for a tiny baby-when you're adjusting the tightness of the shoulder straps(which is soooo easy on this seat), they keep the edges of the straps from rubbing baby's delicate skin on his little neck, a great feature.

The base this seat accompanies is wonderful as well, easy to install and has a levering device with a small ball bearing that simply needs to settle in the green area versus the red. If you have bucket seats or just generally steeper seat bottoms in your vehicle, BRU does carry a seat leveler or a pool noodle or rolled up towel are also fine. We have 2nd row captain's chairs in our van and it fits very nicely.

This seat atatches very well to the Peg line of strollers via actual folding up metal anchors from the stroller's frame. When this seat is on our Pliko P3, the sun shade and the stroller's canopy come together to make a complete seal. A great bonus when baby is brand new and you're very protective of the elements, or like myself-the very curious preschoolers at our daughter's school. The shade on the stroller is hugely adjustable in many ways and has locking little plastic thingies on the side that keep it from being opened.

Not to mention, it's fabulous appearance is icing on the cake.

This seat looks great wherever you go, wonderful for the Mom and Dad on the go, and looks great with your microfiber black dipey bag. It's definitely one that a guy particularly won't feel clashes with his work attire like all the gaudy plaid patterns out there.

I don't believe you must buy this seat, or anyone with such a high price tag for that matter.

But if you enjoy Peg products and like an extremely durable and well made car seat with washable fabric, this is a great one! A big selling point for me is it's weight-an extremely light car seat, I'm 5'8" and 125 pounds with small arms, and some neck problems but this seat was very easy to tote around while our son was still light, and isn't too bad now.

It's a good idea to check into how much various seats actually weigh, and I'm definitely an advocate of hands-on shopping.

We paid 169 dollars and for 6 months of use, every penny was well spent to know what a high quality and SAFE seat our precious son was in. You can't put a dollar value on infant safety-and I wish less people did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!!!, March 25, 2003
This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
After using the Eddie Bauer car seat that came with my stroller this car seat is a 1000 times better. It's light weight which is great when taking the baby out. Also it's not huge and bulky so when we do go out to eat it doesn't take up too much room. Another great feature to me with only having a two door car without alot of space is it snaps into the base easily. I felt so bad for my baby when I was trying to get the old Eddie Bauer car seat into the car.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your childs safety is worth the money!, August 13, 2004
This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
I am shocked by some of the reviews that never mention safety, only convenience. This is a car seat, nothing else, and the main purpose is to protect your child in case of a crash. So if it is heavier, or more difficult then others, as long as it does it's job, that should be all that matters. With that in mind, I love the one we bought for our son. At 5 weeks old we were in a car accident that totaled the BMW 740 we were in. My son walked away with out a scratch. Now if you know cars, you know that this car was huge! And the fact that it was totaled showed how bad the crash was. I thank the car and the car seat for saving my son's life. I was thrown around a little with my seat belt on, I can't imagine what would have happened to him if he had a poor car seat. Please just keep this in mind when reading the reviews. A couple hundred dollars is worth it, and maybe even more. Please check out the company, Britax is supposed to be very good also, so check those out. But please don't rely on a couple of comments about how it doesn't fit into the grocery cart well enough, WHO CARES!! It is a CAR SEAT!! It is not meant to make your life easier, just more peaceful knowing your child will be safe as you have to go about your errands.

5.0 out of 5 stars the BEST car seat!!!, March 1, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
I don't really have much to compare this car seat with since i only have one child and this is the only seat ive bought. however, i have a personal safety story. one week after my baby was born in november, my husband, brand new baby and i were in a terrible car accident. my car was hit by a speeding car in the left rear side. i was injured, b/c of not wearing a seat belt and my husband in the passenger side was fine. the baby was in the middle of the back seat, just inches from where we were hit. i swear that this car seat saved her life. it worked just as it was supposed to. the seat gave a little to absorb the shock but the baby did not even jolt. despite all the chaos, she was still sleeping as if nothing had ever happened. she did not feel a bit of this accident. given my personal experience, i HIGHLY recommend this car seat. it is definitely heavier than other infant seats out there, but i think the safety far outweighs any weight inconvenience

4.0 out of 5 stars Things to think about..., August 17, 2005
By
Rennie (Jacksonville, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat / Infant Carrier with LATCH Base - Black Sable (Baby Product)
I have read several of the reviews and the negative reviews talk about the amount of money spent versus the amount of time a child is in the seat. I have one thing to say about this...money should not be an issue when you are purchasing a safe ride for your child. The seat is expensive but in my opinion it is well worth the money spent. I purchased this seat for my son two years ago and I am now using the same seat for my daughter. I was tempted to get a new seat for my daughter (something more feminine) so I checked out the Graco Snugride....it didn't fit into my back seat very well and therefore moved around a lot. The Peg Perego seat is much easier to secure into my vehicle than the Graco seat. Both of my children are so snug when they are properly fastened into the seat that I don't worry about their safety. I hope I never have to find out first hand of course but I have great confidence in this seat. Aside from the safety, I also have noticed that both children seem to be very comfortable in the seat. They sleep well in the seat even on long trips.

Once your child outgrows the Peg Perego seat I highly recommend the Britax Roundabout or Marathon car seat (depending on the size of your vehicle would determine which one to purchase). The roundabout works for children 5 to 40 lbs. and the Marathon is designed for 5 to about 65 lbs. They are both great seats but the Marathon is rather large. Either seat is a great investment in your child's safety.

Last tidbit...never be afraid to go to the store and ask to try different car seats in your vehicle. Even if Consumer Reports determines that a car seat is the best on the market, remember that every back seat is different and that same seat may not fit in your car. At Babies R Us, an associate will accompany you to your car with different seats and allow you to try them before you purchase. Not every seat is designed to be the safest in your car so you have to check and see how each seat fits into your car. The tighter you can get the base seat belted into your car the safer it will be in the unfortunate event of an accident.
