PEG is a charming musical version of J. Hartley Manners' immortal play PEG O' MY HEART, with music and lyrics by David Heneker. This CD features the original 1984 London cast headed by the stunning Ann Morrison as Peg herself. The cast also includes Sian Phillips (GIGI), Edward Duke, John Hewer, Patricia Michael, Julia Sutton, David McAlister, Martin Smith, Liza Sadovy and Tim Smith. The story of PEG translates effortlessly to the musical comedy stage, and standout numbers include "That's My Father", "Pretty Dresses", "There's a Devil in Me", "I Want to Dance" and "Manhattan Hometown". Highly recommended. [JAY CDJAY1351]

I don't recall ever hearing about this show in the US (this is the London Cast album) but if this archive is even remotely representative of what was seen (and heard) on the West End stage, then I am definitely envious of the people who were lucky enough to see it in person.
Ann Morrison -- who was the original Mary Flynn in "Merrily We Roll Along" -- is Peg, and she is absolutely captivating on CD...what a powerhouse vocal talent, must have been amazing to see her in person. I could not believe "Manhattan Hometown" (geez, where is Ann Morrison performing nowadays?? Somebody bring her back!!) Not to take anything away from the rest of the cast because they are all wonderful. Especially Sian Phillips -- I won't spoil the surprise in her big number (it's a doozy), but you can't help but love her. This is one of those rare cast albums where you can put it on, sit back and listen, and enjoy the journey.
