Book Description

Long, long ago, on the Island of Hawaii, there lived two beautiful goddesses...

So begins the retelling of the classic Hawaiian legend--a tale of fire and ice--when Pele ventured off her fiery mountaintop to make mischief and challenge Poliahu to a sled race down the snowy slopes of Mauna Kea.

It is a story about the power of nature, the power of wills, the power of skill, and an explanation of why the Big Island, to this day, is an island of contrasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beach House Publishing & Malia Collins, No Ka Oi, December 1, 2005
This review is from: Pele and Poliahu: A Tale of Fire and Ice (Hardcover)
Just got this book...pretty amazing. I think Beach House Publishing is doing great work. I believe it's a new imprint of a local Hawai'ian publisher. Very talented bunch.

I particularly like this story, retold by Malia Collins. Ms. Collins is quite the accomplished writer and editor, a definite up-and-comer.

If you're new to Hawai'ian folklore and children books, this one, and many others from Beach House (I think they specialize in the genre) are a great place to start. Most of all, the books are fun and kids love them.

Aloha, D

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for children and adults, November 11, 2005

Hank Gellert (Kailua, Hawaii USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pele and Poliahu: A Tale of Fire and Ice (Hardcover)
This is a story of Pele - the goddess of fire and Poliahu - the goddess of ice. Pele challenges Poliahu to a sled race down the slopes of Mauna Kea. There is mischief, intrigue and fierce competition. Ms Collins brings this legend to life weaving Hawaiian and English words in a way that lets anyone feel like they are joining the two goddesses on a wild sled ride. The narrative is complimented by the excellent art work of Kathleen Peterson. This would make a great Christmas gift. I am looking forward to reading more of Malia Collins' books.
