My 60gb Playstation 3 suffers from either a broken heat sensor, fan or fan control and does not properly cool itself, sometimes the fan will not even be on while the machine is very hot. This leads to it overheating, especially the GPU. Since it is out of warranty my choices were either get it repaired by Sony, buy a replacement (however, the 60gb model has the best features, and those are out of production), fix it myself or buy a cooling solution. I tried to fix it myself but I found no obvious cause to the problem after taking apart my PS3, so I bought this and it has so far done a great job in keeping my PS3 from overheating, and therefore has definitely been worth the purchase cost.
Pros:
*Automatically turns on and off when it's needed.
*Aesthetically matches the PS3
*Keeps my PS3 from overheating, saving me hundreds of dollars.
*Perfectly located near the hottest part of the PS3.
Cons:
*Lit switch on the back is obnoxious. I will probably disable it by hand once this things warranty is out.
*Fat power supply brick cord takes up too much room on power supply.
*Manually adjustable fan control would have been a nice feature in addition to automatic control.
Other:
*Fan noise is more noticeable than my PS3's fan was when it was working, however considering this is an external fan, it's fan noise is pretty solid. One thing to note is that the fan first turns at full blast then moves down to a lower speed. Wait a few minutes before you judge the fan noise.
