5.0 out of 5 stars A nice addition to your PS3 January 18, 2008
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is based on testing the unit with a 60GB PS3.

At the time I am writing this review Amazon does not have a photo available for this unit, which is a shame because shoppers would be able to see how well the cooling unit joins with the PS3.

Though I have not heard any complaints of a PS3 overheating, the long-term effects are still unknown and I wanted to preserve my investment since the 60GB system (with the PS2 Emotion Engine installed for maximum backward compatibility) has been discontinued. I use the system to play games and watch movies on a regular basis, and after marathon game sessions I have noticed the system has felt fairly warm.

So, I was very pleased to see an almost instant effect from the Pelican cooling unit. Within minutes, the system was noticeably cooler to the touch and though the air coming out of the side vent was still warm, it was considerably cooler. It's worth mentioning that the cooling unit is designed so that two of the four exhaust fans are located on the bottom if you're playing with your system laying flat, therefore for maximum efficiency you should stand your PS3 up and place the cooling fan on top. Nevertheless, the unit does an excellent job of cooling down my system even with two fans blocked.

The cooling system comes with matching trim to blend in with the PS3 and does not need to be attached to the system with screws or hooks. A thin base tab allows the weight of the PS3 to keep the unit in place when laying flat, or the unit can simply be placed on top of an upright system and its own weight will keep it in place. Once setup, the system looks nearly identical as before, only slightly wider/taller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, Something Works as Advertised December 16, 2007

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have not had any cooling problems. I invested in this unit to hopefully keep it that way. It works exactly the way it should. It is not horribly loud. You can hear the fans but there are five extra fans, so you will hear them running. The noise is not obnoxiously loud.

For those of you who have had troubles with the fans not shutting down after use, I feel for you and hope you can either have the unit repaired or replaced. My unit shuts down after the PS3 has be shutdown for 40-minutes...and that is after I have played games for more than 8-hours. I know, I am a game junkie :)

Have a great Holiday!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a Must buy August 23, 2007

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
So I got a PS3 about two months ago. Best system out there.
But a week after use, it crashed due to overheating problems that I've been hearing about.

This usually isn't a problem I don't think, but my room holds in heat pretty well and that probably contributed to the system failure.

In any case, this fan system is awesome.
It's made to look like the actual system, and from a distance you can't tell it apart. Easy to use, no installation, plug in and turn it on.
It also switches on and off depending on the temperature of the system. How awesome is that?!

The only qualm I have about it is that the fan is pretty damn loud when you first start to use it. But after a few weeks, it works it's own kinks out and is now smooth as silk.

Must Buy, MUST BUY.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fixed my PS3 March 27, 2008
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
My 60gb Playstation 3 suffers from either a broken heat sensor, fan or fan control and does not properly cool itself, sometimes the fan will not even be on while the machine is very hot. This leads to it overheating, especially the GPU. Since it is out of warranty my choices were either get it repaired by Sony, buy a replacement (however, the 60gb model has the best features, and those are out of production), fix it myself or buy a cooling solution. I tried to fix it myself but I found no obvious cause to the problem after taking apart my PS3, so I bought this and it has so far done a great job in keeping my PS3 from overheating, and therefore has definitely been worth the purchase cost.

Pros:
*Automatically turns on and off when it's needed.
*Aesthetically matches the PS3
*Keeps my PS3 from overheating, saving me hundreds of dollars.
*Perfectly located near the hottest part of the PS3.

Cons:
*Lit switch on the back is obnoxious. I will probably disable it by hand once this things warranty is out.
*Fat power supply brick cord takes up too much room on power supply.
*Manually adjustable fan control would have been a nice feature in addition to automatic control.

Other:
*Fan noise is more noticeable than my PS3's fan was when it was working, however considering this is an external fan, it's fan noise is pretty solid. One thing to note is that the fan first turns at full blast then moves down to a lower speed. Wait a few minutes before you judge the fan noise.

5.0 out of 5 stars BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY July 9, 2008
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This product is pretty good, it does what it is advertised, very easy to hook up, and this is how it works, Once you got it hooked up on you PS3 it just waits to reach a especific point in temperature and it turns on by it self, allowing the PS3 to get rid of the hot air much quicker, what I noticed is that the back of the console does not get very hot anymore and that the sid panel where you hook ups this thing lets out the air much faster than the back or before you hook up the device. On the noise issue, I can't complain, because the sound from my home theater system drowns it out. So my advice is i f you have a PS3 of 60gb or 80gb and one of these coolers gets in you way, buy it, because they are pretty hard to come by.
ROCK ON!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hello Amazon, This rating isn't for a game.
Pelican cooler seems fine to me. Not sure why I bought it though as the PS3 seems to take care of itself. But then it is the winter so this might be handy during the hotter months
