I bought mine used for lake cruising and fishing. Used it several times now and it has been great. I may take it on some of the rivers near me in the future for some over night camping and fishing trips. It is a heavy solidly built 80lb canoe. But two people have no problem putting it on and off the car top. If you are going it alone you will have some difficulty because of the size and weight. It has built in drink and rod holders plus an ice chest/seat. It says it can hold 800lbs but I would never have the need for that much weight. I got a great deal on my canoe, paddles and vests. Would I have bought it new in a store or on the web? No, I'm cheap and always looking for deals.

We bought this canoe used at an excellent price (we agree with the other reviewer always looking for a deal). And even new this canoe is 1/4 the price of lighter, river designed canoes. This canoe, if you look on the Pelican website is in the class called Family Leisure. It has cup holders and fishing rod holders. It's meant to be used in a lake paddling slowly around with the family and stopping here and there to fish while you drink on a soda, with no worries of tipping when your 7 year old leans over or forgets and stands up. It's not a white water river canoe and doesn't claim to be one. The guy who gave it one star does not have a valid review for the design of this canoe. Read the 2 comments listed below his review to get other's opinions on his review. I love the fact that if it ever gets a dent, you just open the drain plug and put it in the sun for a couple of hours and it will "memory" back into shape. And as for it being heavy, my husband read the 1 star review before we picked it up and was worried. After we got it he said the buyer must be a wuss. Sure, it's 80 lbs. That's two bags of dog food. It would be tough for a single guy to load this on his car and take it out - but remember - this is family leisure - built for stability. Me, a 5'3" female and my two sons, age 7 & 8 carried it. No, we didn't lift it on the car, but we easily can carry it to a lake. Now my husband (5'9")and I did lift it up on the car, and took it down when we got home with no problems. And I have read other reviews of men who could carry it by themselves, but at 16' long, you'd have to be a tall guy. I don't see it being a canoe that you want to throw on the car every week, but if you live on a lake or close to one - it's perfect. That's why we bought it and we LOVE it.

I don't have the Dlx model but I do have the Pelican 15.5 canoe which I find is a little unstable. I was on Lake Tahoe with two small adult passengers(in addition to myself), and a couple of times when we were rowing, the canoe listed as if it wanted to roll over. When the wakes from boats came our way, it got scary. We did roll over twice, though our own misteps I admit, but it rolled over too easily. I'm experience with canoes - been all over the Delaware river in aluminum canoes since I was a kid. I am now thinking about getting a Canoe Stablizer to correct this problem since I can't afford a better canoe at this time.

Nope - this isn't Ram-X. and you can tell. Pelican makes a notoriously heavy canoe, and this one busts the scales. I don't know where they get this space-aged material- but it must rival lead in elemental weight.

Who is this good for? someone that leaves it lakeside (no freakin way this would would muster Class I river movement) and likes to float around. I can think of many watercraft better-suited for such purposes, but hey, that's just me.

Really not for rivers- It tracks like a barge. but it is stable- considering you are on a 85# hunk of semi-buoyant plastic.

It's got cushions and a cooler built in. Not exactly the minimalist canoe experience. and if you ever have to portage or car-top this sucker, you will need a chiropractor.
