I've been waiting for the Lifeproof case to be released only to find they're taking their sweet time. I've been using the Griffin Survivor which sufficed despite not offering real screen impact protection. As more inferences can be made about the design of the upcoming lifeproof fré and nuud which will likely mirror the recent ipad mini design around the $129 price tag with the option of adding a screen cover for an additional $30, I've decided my patience is not worth it. My job demands dust, dirt, drop, and water resistance, but a screen impact is a very likely occurrence when my ipad is shuffling around the cockpit or in my flight bag. This case has exceeded my expectations. I'm typically not a fan of folio cases, in fact I've never liked any of them. They always seem to fold back and get in the way. The hinge on the Pelican case ensures the cover folds completely around and flush so as not to be in the way. The hinge and latch are solid and don't seem like they will weaken after prolonged use, further strengthened by Pelican's lifetime guarantee. The case is surprisingly light. Installation is somewhat tedious however. You have to remove all the hex screws from the case; and I mean all 15 of them. Fortunately a hex screwdriver and extra hex screws are included in the event of frustration :)
Once you put the case back on its very solid and I am most pleased with the case. So much so that unless the Lifeproof is a clone of it or has some amazing new feature, for example it can withstand small arms fire (a possibility in my line of work), I really have no further interest in the Lifeproof cases for ipad Air.

This case isn't for everyone, but I do like it some. There are some fairly major problems with the design, but most can be worked around. If I had to outfit some employees with a bunch of iPads, this case would certainly be very high on my consideration list.

Protection: Very good!. I haven't drop tested my Air in it yet and have no plans to. From the look of the case and the materials used, I would say your Air might just withstand the rated 4 foot fall to a hard surface. I doubt the case would, but that is replaceable at a lower cost. Pelican stands behind it with a lifetime warranty, but I am not sure this would include "drop tests" either accidental or otherwise. Everything is sealed in this case. People complain about the 15 fasteners required to lock it up, but this is the design. It needs to be sealed up tight. If you dropped your Air into a deep puddle of water on your driveway, it would stand a better than even chance of being unharmed in my opinion as long as you didn't let it stay there for any length of time. The screen protection is great. The cover never actually touches the screen and rests about 1/8th of inch over it from what I can tell. Closed, a 200 pound person could probably sleep on this thing and not damage their screen. I wouldn't test that out by the way, its only a guess. Maybe that is why Pelican decided to not include the magnets necessary to put the screen to sleep automatically. I wished they had worked that one out and you will see why later.

Usability: Depends on how and where. It ranges from very poor to very good. Let me explain.

If you primarily use you iPad in your hand, the usability is very good. This case feels great in your hands. The cover folds over and your grip on the device is fantastic.

Ok, initial opinion was that this was not a Pelican case. Not made out of cheap plastic without buffer ridges or a face shielded by glass or some kind of membrane. Then I looked a bit closer. Instead of cheap plastic this was very well formed aluminum. Everything was held together by high grade machine screws. And there is a built in flange that, when everything is assembled properly, will rest against the face of the iPad forming a waterproof barrier. Very light due to great materials and good construction, making this the perfect case for the iPad Air. I would have given it 5 stars except that the machine screws seemed to spawn more screws as I disassembled the case to get the iPad into it. I took my time and slowly disassembled, inserted the iPad, then slowly reassembled it all. Again, only 4 stars cause the screws are numerous and you have to be careful. Over tighten one of these babies will snap the screw off (I didn't, only cause I have learned not to over tighten screws like these). Very happy with the final product.

Overall I am happy with the case. If I think about Pelican, who they are and their core products this case is right up their alley and I would give this a five star rating. I am giving this product a 3 star rating because I believe they dropped the ball when it came to the details.

Pros
- The case protects your Ipad! I've even tried a few drop test from four feet (with the lid closed).
- The ipad is securely held in a silicon (rubber) cushion between the outer hard plastic covers.
- The hinge appears to work well!
- The lid (flip cover) latch locks into place, a little firm but it works.

Cons (Missing Details)
- When using the Ipad on a counter, it's works well up to about 20 degrees of viewing angle, any further and you can forget about it! (Hint - They should have placed the same rubber on the latch along the back cover edge)
- Unable to switch the rotation/mute lock switch and I have small hands.
- Volume buttons are HARD to push from the bottom and not very ergonomic.
- Power button is HARD to push.
- Speakers come out of the bottom, shame on apple but Pelican should have fixed it by having the sound come out the front!
- Mic picks up from the top and back, another shame on apple. When I use facetime (often) I always lean the top away from me so I can see the screen. Well that doesn't work so well because people can't hear me then. Maybe Pelican should fix this one too?
- The home button is awkward to push, not sure they really needed all that plastic around the button.

Why do I like this case so much? Cause it rocks in protecting my Ipad and I've modified to better suit my needs. I've drilled holes in the case for the Mic & Speakers; now others can hear me better and I can hear Youtube videos now.
