Product Description

Produces from a design partnership with BMW DesignWorks, the HardBack series cases are built with all the legendary features of a Pelican case-crush resistant, watertight to 3 feet and an automatic pressure equalization valve that prevents vacuum lock to make it easier to open at any altitude. In addition, all cases in the series offer anti-scratch foam inserts to add another layer of protection for delicate electronics. To ensure that they stay shut in tough conditions, they also sport stainless steel hardware and easy-snap latches. The Pelican 1055CC HardBack case is designed to protect tablet-type computers and eReaders up to 8" including the Kindle Fire, Nook Color, BlackBerry Playbook and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.1 from the harshest conditions known to man.

I wanted a case that would secure my Nexus 7 and keep it safe and purchased this one. I am happy with the case but I wish that Pelican provided some very soft foam with it as the Nexus 7 is thinner than the case is designed for and therefore can bounce around the inside (thereby defeating the purpose). I was able to locate some foam to remedy the problem but it would be nice to have it included in the purchase (hence the 4 star review).

The Pelican 1055cc will keep your Kindle alive on the road. There are some limitations to this product, specifically you have to customize it with foam to keep a Kindle in place because the latest eReaders are so thin and the interior volume of the 1055cc is so generous. Adhesive backed foam is not included at the time of this review 01/09/2012.

The Pelican 1055cc case still earns five stars because it is the lightest, smallest serious container for a Kindle on the market. If your travel jacket has large inside pockets, this will fit inside your travel clothing without a separate baggage risk.

The case is well made, although that's expected from the Pelican brand, it is still worth noting that this case is well worth the money being charged. The case latch is secure, but still readily opens with one hand. My 79 year old mother was able to open and close this case with no problem. Some other Pelican cases are less convenient to open, but this makes sense for a lightweight eReader case.

This is not the case I would use for an emergency reader/communicator. There isn't enough room, and the case isn't as stupidity-proof as the Pelican 1150 case. The lack of a handle or other external attachment makes this less useful for "very bad days", but it still is much better than any soft-sided case out there. You will need to place charging materials in another place, because there just isn't room for a multi-source adapter in the case.

This won't do everything, but it is much better protection for your Kindle than anything it's size.

In response to AudioJoe, I tested the case immediently after I bought it. I filled my bathtub with roughly one foot of water and held it under water for ten minutes. I placed copious amounts of tissue paper inside the case to make sure there was no leakage. The 1055cc preformed flawlessly. The tissue inside was not wet at all. AudioJoe must have just got the one defective case. Mine was perfect.

I purchased this case just over 1 year ago today. I had been looking for a case that would not only safely store my kindle fire, but protect it from being crushed while in my backpack. I had read in another review that the case fit the kindle fire, but still allowed the device to bounce or slide around inside. I ordered the Pelican 1055CC along with a QUBITS Tpu Gel Skin case to add a little thickness to my kindle fire so that it would fit more snugly. Once I received the Pelican case, I tested to see if the gel skin case added enough thickness to keep the kindle from sliding around, but it didn't. I then added a microfiber cleaning cloth inside the case and barely moves around inside. Even if the bare device were to slide around freely, this would not be an issue. The liner is padded on all sides and the device would not be damaged.

I also tested to see if the case was waterproof by dunking it under the sink for about 30 seconds. After drying the outside of the case and opening it, I noticed that it was damp on one side. I then tried squeezing the air out of the case through the check valve so that the negative pressure would keep the gasket sealed tight. This looked promising, but the pressure equalized after about a minute and I could start to see the gaps on the side of the case widen. I think the problem might be the gasket itself as it seems to look closer to foam than rubber or silicon. Even though my case is not waterproof, it is still not an issue for me.

For the first 9 months of use I pretty much stored my case in my backpack, only removing it to use or charge my device. It is always sandwiched between either my fishing tackle, tools, photography equipment, camping gear, or whatever else I am carrying in my pack.

I ordered this case for my iPad Mini. The case does work with the device, but the iPad Mini is just a tad too wide for the cushioning provided inside the case. It does close, just the device is a little crooked. Also, if you have the Smart Cover from Apple, you will have to remove it if you want to put your iPad Mini in this case. Otherwise it is still water-tight and probably the best hardback case on the market, so if you want to deal with the subtle inconveniences, this case will work for an iPad Mini.

The interior dimentions of the 1055CC are deceiving. I wanted a case that would accomindate my 7" Nexus tablet without removing the case/cover. The tablet with case is a tad less than 3/4" inches and I the interior dimentions were .listed on Pelican's website as being 0.85". After removing the tapered interior liner from the top and bottom of the case it fit great with the cover left on. Note: Without the tablet / ereader cover it fit great with the liner
