Excellent Remaster Of An 80's Classic!,
By
This review is from: Pelican West (Audio CD)
This new label, American Beat Records, has done a fantastic job with this much needed remaster of this cd. Although it doesn't have the bonus tracks that the previous import versions had, the sound quality is MUCH better, and the cd packaging is excellent. This is a band that should not be judged by thier singles alone, every track on this cd is fantastic. A great blend of jazz, r&b, pop, reggae and other mysterious influences make this one of my favourite shirts, whoops, I mean cds. Highly recommended!

I picked this record up on a whim and was blown away. It's such an interesting mix of styles, jazz, new wave, pop, impressive horn arrangements, complex rolling bass lines... I can't believe this record isn't sited more often as a classic in the evolution of independent music.
The record sounds like a more advanced version of a lot of the brit-pop acts that have been advancing on the charts lately. Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, The Wombats, etc. all owe something to Haircut 100 for developing a fun poppy sound with varied instrumentation. The horn arrangements alone are outstanding and to be used alongside songs of young love and ska-tinged guitar riffs is very exciting. A landmark release from the early 80's that every new music fan needs to hear. It's a shame Haircut 100 lived such a short life.

A lightweight classic,

As a former new waver, I think this ranks up with the dozen or so post-punk classics, along with Special Beat Service, Lexicon of Love, The Specials, and Absolutely. Resolutely lightweight and full of melody, it's consistent, upbeat, and definitive. The lyrics are outright nonsense, but Nick Heyward, in all his great work, has always favored sound and feel over message. The only complaints are the unnecesary dance mix of Favorite Shirts and the choice of the shorter single mix of October Is Orange instead of the far better 12" mix.Unlike so many of its contemporaries, this holds up remarkably well.

This was a gift for my husband, it was one of his favorite "cd's" in the 80's. He loved it.
