Over the past several years I have switched from ballpoints to fountain pens because they are much more comfortable to use (they require much less pressure than a ballpoint to operate) and because they are interesting gadgets. During this time I have used numerous different brands and models and I have always been impressed with Pelikan pens at all price ranges - both for their style and function. I am especially happy with my 600.

As with all of the Pelikans I have used, the 600 is totally reliable for the following reasons: it never skips or hesitates even if unused for a few weeks, the piston filler works smoothly and holds a decent amount of ink, the clip is secure and easy to use, and the nib is smooth without being slippery. Additionally, the 600 (like the 200, 400, 800, and 1000 series) has a nib unit that can be unscrewed from the barrel and replaced with different sized nibs that are sold seperately.

What sets the 600 apart from the other Pelikan series I have listed above is the size (and weight - it's lighter than the 800 or 1000 without feeling flimsy), it is wider than a standard stick pen which means it is more comfortable to use for extended writing sessions, but not so wide that it feels too large.

You should also be aware that Chartpak, the US distributor of Pelikan, has much better customer service than any of the other fountain pen companies that I have dealt with.

Some people reading this might be attracted to fountain pens because they are considered luxury goods or status symbols. If this describes you, you might want to reconsider. I have found that waiting for someone to notice your pen is like waiting for someone to notice your shoelaces - it rarely happens. For those of you who want a pen that is more than an expensive bauble, the 600 is it - a perfect blend of function and form.

I've got one with a fine nib, which runs a little wide. Probably more like a medium, in my opinion.

Good ink capacity, smooth and wet writer, nice balance with the cap posted. Very reliable with no skipping and seems to write forever on a fill. Great service from the US distributor (Chartpak) including free nib swap for a different size within first thirty days. Nice understated appearance.

Only potential issue is that it is very light; if you like a bit of heft, go for the M800, which is almost twice as heavy and also slightly longer and fatter.
