5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
These things are fantastic. I use them at the shooting range, and I'm no longer bothered by my own gun or the yahoo standing next to me with a 50 caliber canon.

They are very comfortable, cut noise to almost nothing, yet allow you hear commands at the range so you don't fire when someone runs out to change a target. Turn down the volume, or turn them off,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Turnning Peltor Tactical Sport "on" or "off'
I have not used my Peltor Tactical Sport noise cancelling earphones for some time. After replacing the bateries, I don't remember how to turn the device on or off! There is a small rubber embosed on/off symbol on the side of one of the ear pieces adjacent to the volune plus and minus buttons. Pressing that (on/off) button seems to do nothing. There is no indicator like a...

Turn down the volume, or turn them off, and they will block out everything from 4th of July fireworks to the kids killing each other in the living room.

One nice feature is that they only use one battery that's easy to replace. It will last a lot longer if you remember to turn them off when you are not using them.

Finally, someone mentioned the lag time after they cut out. Yes, there is a slight lag after someone takes a shot and they cutout, but it's really not bad, and you get used to it quickly. I only notice it if a truck is idling at the range. You can hear the truck, someone takes a shot, then a second passes before you can hear the truck again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but not the best now, August 28, 2007

I have been using these for seven years, or more. They have been 100% reliable and have been a great advantage in pistol shooting. The sound is balanced correctly, so you still have a proper sense of a sound's direction. The passive noise cancellation is adequate, as good as most headsets and better than many, but not the very best.

I wear these in the woods and at the range. In the woods they give a huge improvement on my already above average (for my 45 years) hearing, with the volume turned up I can hear birds that I didn't even realize were there before, as well as the sounds of distant neighbors going about their motorized business. I have been able to track a shot deer by the sounds of breaking twigs as it ran 25 yards before falling and rolling down a hill. Sounds that would have been lost in the aftermath of my 303 now perfectly audible.

The electronic hearing protection works very well, I am never aware of the onset of a bang, just a sudden silence which tapers off a moment later, as if someone had suddenly stuffed cotton wool into your ears.

There are only two down sides, after each bang there is a noticeable delay. On the range these delays can overlap the next shot, so in the end you get big gaps when your hearing is only as good as everyone else's. The cans are a bit bulky, so with a rifle like an AR15 where you need to get your head down to the sights they can interfere. Peltor have solved this with the Comtac models which have a cutout to give the stock clearance, but these don't have that.

Peltor have been excellent for me and I'd not hesitate to buy from them again, which is actually why I am here looking to upgrade to the Comtac so that I can use my radio gear at the same time as I am shooting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps me to keep what hearing I have left, October 9, 2007

I wear two hearing aids. When I go to the range there is always someone using a "hand cannon" nearby that, even with standard ear protection, makes my ears ring .... So I did the usual net "review" and selected these ear protectors to try. They seriously dampen the blasts from the hand cannons that the young folks are into these days, sure is nice to walk out of the range and still be able to hear ......

4.0 out of 5 stars Great hearing protector, December 22, 2008
This review is from: Peltor 97039 Tactical 7S Hearing Protector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased two of these; one for my girlfriend and one for myself. I do a lot of outdoor/indoor shooting and these work great (Springfield XDM 40, Stag AR-15 5.56, Ruger M77 MKII, etc); however, I always use these in combination with earplugs (which I recommend). With the earplugs in, I just turn up the volume so that I can hear others when they speak. It amplifies sounds very nicely and cuts out sound when the guns go off. The neat feature about these ear protectors is that you can tell which direction the sound is coming from. In regards to the noise reduction functionality...I'm not sure about the reviewers that say that they don't hear anything when a gun goes off. These are rated less than 30 dbs in noise reduction. I can hear my Ruger 10/22 going off when I shoot CCI Stinger rounds and that is with the sound amplification OFF! Those who speak to the contrary are over-hyping the product or have lost their hearing already. I use these with ear plugs and I can still hear when guns go off around me so those of you who are expecting dead silence from these...please don't be fooled. These are good for the price that you pay. I would recommend these if your budget allows.

[UPDATE Feb 8th, 2011]
After owning this product for quite some time, I would continue to recommend this product to my friends. The product has held up well and has withstood my abuse - which is impressive. After putting this product through its paces, I came to realize that this is not the best hearing protector to wear if you're using long guns. The reason being is that the ear protector is just too big (near the battery compartment) and it keeps you from getting a proper cheek weld. This isn't an issue if you're shooting a handgun but if you spend a lot of time behind that rifle trying to work on that sub-MOA accuracy, it may become uncomfortable and become an issue. I'm actually in the market for a better hearing protector to wear when I'm using my long guns. I don't knock the product for this because it is what it is, a hearing protector and it does this well.

[UPDATE July 25th, 2011]
I've been spending a lot more time behind the driver and I'm at the point where wearing the Peltor is no longer a feasible option due to the discomfort and obstruction when acquiring a proper cheek weld. In my search for a better solution, I decided to go with Westone Multipurpose Style 40 custom ear plugs. By far the best investment a person can make when purchasing hearing protection. With the Westone, I can shoot my Remington 700 5R .308 without the discomfort of wearing the Peltor and there is sufficient hearing protection. However, when shooting the AR, I need to double-up on wearing the Peltor b/c of sound created by the recoil of the buffer spring inside the buffer tube. In terms of using the Westone with the handguns, it is not sufficient in suppressing noise while shooting in an indoor range. I continue to double-up and use both the Westone and the Peltor combo while indoors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peltor Ear Muffs-Tactical 7 Classic, August 13, 2008
This review is from: Peltor 97039 Tactical 7S Hearing Protector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have used my Tactical 7 classic for trap shooting with good sucess. They dampen sound well and I can hear commands even with poor hearing. They do not interfere with mounting the gun. I would have rated them 5 stars if they would have come with a carrying case. They do not fold up into a small unit either. A very good thing about them is the battery installs from the outside and does not require the insides to be taken out. They are well made. I would buy them again.

This unit IS a bit expensive, but it does work exactly the way you would want it to: it is comfortable, it allows low-level sounds to come through with clarity (using the adjustable volume contro) and it quickly and effectively limits the high level sounds. It works so well that I consider it to be a good value solution rather than a pricy solution.

I'm both a shooter and a woodworker, two hobbies that require hearing protection. The Tac 7S fills the bill wonderfully. It works perfectly and cuts off ambient sound instantly.

Two small complaints (?): for the price, it would be nice if pertor included a case of some sort, and secondly, auto shut-off would be a nice aaddition. Forgot to turn it off the first day I used it and the next morning, it only worked as an expensive muff.

Otherwise, I truly feel I made a great choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the shooting range, May 9, 2008

I recently took a 4-day defensive handgun course at the Front Sight school in Parumph, NV. Aside from the excellent training, the Peltor Tac 7S ear protection (the one Front Sight recommends) performed flawlessly. I could hear the instructor's voice perfectly, yet the loud pistol concussions were hardly noticed. I've used both electronic and non-electronic ear muffs while on the range and the electronic perform much better. You can still talk to people and hear their response without the danger of hearing damage. Highly recommend.

This is the second Peltor Tactical 7S I have, the first I purchased over a year ago and liked them as I can hear the comands at the range. My wife went shooting with me about a month ago and loved it. I let her use my reguler muffs but it was hard for her to hear my instructions so I let her use my Peltor 7S. Now I have bought her her own so we both can talk to each other. I didn't look at any other as the first ones worked fine and still do. So now we are a Two Peltor Tactical 7S family that shoots together.Peltor Tactical 7S Hearing Protector #97039-00000

I bought the hearing protection to use at the pistol range. I works very well, you can carry on a normal conversation but it still blocks the report from shots being fired around you. I highly recommend it for anyone who shoots at a range.
