1.0 out of 5 stars They simply do not work very well
I have owned a pair of the Peltor 7S headset since the early 1990s and those continue to work extremely well for me. I purchased the 6S thinking I would like the behind the head design & slightly slimmer profile and that I would let my son use the 7Ss.

I have owned a pair of the Peltor 7S headset since the early 1990s and those continue to work extremely well for me. I purchased the 6S thinking I would like the behind the head design & slightly slimmer profile and that I would let my son use the 7Ss.

After a full morning at the range I am returning these and just buying anohter set of 7s.

They do a very poor job of noise suppression. My ears were still uncomfortable with these on regardless of how I had the volume controls set.

They do not work AT ALL with a rifle (at least an AR15 style rifle). The behind-the-ear band prevented me from getting a sight picture through the scope because it pushed against the buttstock of the rifle.

They are inconvenient to pack because they do not fold up.

Wished I would have read the reviewes before purchasing. Glad Amazon is great with returns.

I'm a competition shooter and as such need to be able to understand range commands while also protecting my hearing. I intended this to be my main use for this item. There are some pro's and con's to this system. One such pro is its compact size, reduced at the top of the ear piece for use under a helmet if needed. One con that come to mind is the low amount of insulation inside the ear cup. There is this little flimsy piece of foam that can be replaced with thicker pads from, in my case another set of ear pro. While it is a great system, the compact version does not have the higher sound amplifying capability as the larger round type of the same brand. As another pro I must mention the low weight. You can have these on for hours and only realize it if your sweating hard. One con to this "behind the head" type is that is will be pushed off your ears in the prone position, which sucks. If used in a constant wearing situation such as combat or training its also going to limit your ability to look up for the same reason. This can be fixed by just wearing these upside down, sounds silly but is the only option in these situations. The on/off knobs are easily bumped and turned on inside a ruck sack or whatever and you will find them on when you thought they were off. Not sure what model has gel inserts in the pad portion of the cups but it's not this one and it sure would be nice to have for extended use. All that said and I would buy this item again. Its ability to amplify low level sounds is impressive. I still wish they amplify voices better, just cause its louder doesn't mean its always clear. Maybe volume control would help as it seems to also amplify white noise of wind, water, breathing ect. All in all best brand on the market and well worth the $65

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, May 17, 2008

This review is from: Peltor 97043 Tactical 6S Behind the Head Hearing Protector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought these hearing protectors to use at the local gun range. They work moderately well, but I find the noise reduction not quite adequate for range use. These don't have enough padding to block out enough sound of even a 9mm, let alone the guy next door shooting a 500 magnum. They work fine for outdoor shooting.

They also don't fit on my wife or adult daughter, both of whom have narrow faces. They only seem to stay on my big head (in more ways than one). Women or men with shorter or narrower jaws need to look at the over the head hearing protectors.

On the plus side, the electronics do allow me to keep a normal conversation while shooting at the range, and their price is far below the pro version electronic hearing protectors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Amazon and the Peltor 97043 Tactical 6S Ear Defenders, May 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Peltor 97043 Tactical 6S Behind the Head Hearing Protector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I decided I needed electronic ear defenders a few days before a big multi-national military marksmanship competition was to commence. I searched the web and found to my surprise that Amazon (a company from which I had previously purchased books) also sold items such as this. I read the reviews and decided to buy. I'm in Australia. Amazon is in the US. They promised to have the Peltors to me by the next Wednesday and I was leaving on Thursday for a long road journey to the competition site. True to their word the defenders arrived by DHL on the Wednesday. I was very, very impressed. The freight almost cost as much as the defenders but the Peltors were a bargain and the convenience of shopping with Amazon far outweighed any possibility I would try to find a retailer from which to buy this product in order to save a few dollars. So as for Amazon, I will definitely shop here again.

Now onto the Peltor's. In previous reviews, there had been mention of hissing. Mine work perfectly. The sound is crystal clear and if you turn them up to full volume, they are like hearing aids. You actually hear more than you would otherwise. If I have a complaint it is that I can't tell if the batteries are going flat and the on/off switches are too easily bumped on. Often when I took the defenders out of my webbing I found they had been rubbed into the on condition. When you turn the switches off and leave them for a while, the batteries recover a little bit. When you turn the switches on, you have normal operation but after a few minutes, if the batteries are flat, the sound diminishes. Knowing I would be doing a lot of shooting and have the defenders on for most of the days I was in the competition, I took the precaution of taking spare batteries so the matter of depleted batteries was not a problem. Other than that, the Peltors's are terrific. They fit around the back of the head allowing you to wear head-dress which was mandatory according to competition rules. They don't get in the way of the rifle butt when firing rifles with a straight through butt configuration as is the case with most modern military shoulder fired weapons. Haven't tried them out with a combat helmet but suspect they can be accommodated. There was mention about sweating in the head sets. The weather was down in the low 15 to 10 degrees with 10 to 25 km/hr winds coming off snow and ice so sweating was not a problem; even with body armour on and running from mound to mound. In fact, I found myself sometimes wearing the Peltors as ear muffs to protect my ears against the stinging cold.

So... am I happy? You bet. All of my fellow competitors were seriously impressed with these defenders as they had older models that had the strap going over the top of the head. They were even more impressed when I told them how inexpensive the Peltors were and the speed with which Amazon provided them.

As a last helpful comment. Shooters need good, powerful, compact, zoom binoculars that will fit into an ammo pouch. You kind folk at Amazon might consider having them on the same page as the Peltors. I think you'd sell a few of them also.

Thanks Peltor for a great product at a good price and thanks Amazon for great service.Peltor 97043 Tactical 6S Behind the Head Hearing Protector

These I have used many times. Several other guys are using the same ones and love them. I think they are a very good product and will give them two thumbs up, always.

I wanted to upgrade my ear protection to one that would allow me to hear conversations but shut out the sound when shooting. For the price of this product, I'm very happy with the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works like a charm, November 18, 2009

This review is from: Peltor 97043 Tactical 6S Behind the Head Hearing Protector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased these for everyday range wear. they work beautifully on the firing line. all gun shots were well muffled, but i was still able to have a conversation with another person with out raising my voice. in fact, i was able to notice that my friend, using foam earplugs, was elevating the volume of his voice. They also fit well under my Army Advanced Combat Helmit. I had worn over-the-head communication devices under my ACH on deployments and found that they only give me a head ache. these fit well and aren't compressing my skull. Inserting the two AAA batteries needed in each ear cup was a bit tricky at first, but not impossible.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, May 28, 2009
This review is from: Peltor 97043 Tactical 6S Behind the Head Hearing Protector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I work on a shooting range every day, and found this to be one of the worst hearing protection products I have used. They fell apart after very little use, and the behind the neck mount was poor at best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peltor Ear Muffs, January 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Peltor 97043 Tactical 6S Behind the Head Hearing Protector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought these earmuffs so that I could wear a pork pie type hat, as these go behind the head, across the nape.
This set works good enough in protecting the ears from loud noises at the shooting range, but not as good as my Howard Leights, which has only one on/off switch, wherein the Peltors have two separate switches, one for the left and the other for the right. Now, perhaps it could be a blessing that I could modulate the muffling effect from side to side.
If I come into some extra mad money, I'll fork out the $250.00+ for Peltor's stereo model; then again, maybe not. This one serves it's purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected, January 6, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Peltor 97043 Tactical 6S Behind the Head Hearing Protector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've owned and loved an over-the-head pair of Peltor 6s for a while now and after many years the sun has gotten into my eyes one too many times. I decided to try these behind the head ones - and they hold on better than I ever expected them to.

Shooting shotguns and moving around doesn't cause any issues.
