Very Good Bit of Kit,
By Steve "Steve" (Camp Victory, Iraq) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peltor MT15H69FB-09 Com-Tac II Headset (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've used this headset in Iraq for over three years. It fits well underneath a helmet and in a contact I can have a conversation with someone while all hell is breaking loose around me. I train with it weekly on the range and us eit on every mission. If you are in a hostile environment this is an essential piece of kit.

Great for the range or hunting, very comfortable you can hear the Deer before you see them. And at the range they are great, very quite and still be able to talk with them on between shoots

The first product I received was defective. I called Amazon and they could not have been more helpful in getting me a replacement extremely quickly. The second product I received was fine. I have now used the Peltor unit and found that it did everything it claimed to do well and was extremely comfortable to wear.

I picked these up after shooting at a deer with my scout squad. It was the first time I had ever shot the scout without hearing protection and it about made me want to cry. I had been thinking about getting some walkers game ears or something along those lines for awhile and decided now was the time. I have heard good things about Peltor in the past and after seeing what they offered picked these up.(they also have a set called sporttacs specific to hunting application). I am blown away by them. They muffle dynamic sound better than I could have hoped, they are more comfortable than I expected, and they amp hearing in a way I would have not believed. My 7 year old was upstairs threatening to punch his 5 year old brother and was whispering so I wouldnt hear and I heard it like I was in the room. In the woods, the sound amplification is insane. You can shoulder a weapon now problem as well. I think they are pretty well made with metal components where needed but plastic to save weight where practical. These things have instantly become a necessary piece of my hunting and tactical kits. My father, brother, and neighbor have all purchased them as well since getting a chance to put their hands on mine.

Of course I bought these for situations on the range and elsewhere where I need to hear what's going on and ear plugs won't do. Besides offering great ambient sound amplification and excellent noise protection, these headphones are the most comfortable I've worn yet. My two previous headphone-style noise protectors, including a mid-priced electronic pair of sort-of-similar design, were almost torture to wear after an hour or more- these are not. I also like the water resistant design and the fact that, with practice, batteries could be traded out quickly and without taking the unit off.EDIT: After using these for some months, I've realised another previously unsuspected benefit: this model allows a safe level of every noise to come through, meaning for instance that you can hear that your firearm has fully cocked. The cheaper units I used earlier were typical, and a little unnerving, in that they would cut out all sound with any sharp metallic noise, occasionally even when the safety was taken off, and certainly when the gun was cocked: this phenom. worryingly reduced the feedback I was used to. These Peltors allow that normal auditory experience and that alone would be worth the money over the long term (this ability is also alluded to in the top Amazon review by the military person). I'm even cosidering wearing these while hunting to see how that goes.

I'm loving my ComTac IIs. I bought them to replace my Sordin ear pro. The Sordins worked fine; the problem with them is that neither the boom mic nor the PTT cable are removable. I don't run commo through them very often at all, so I end up having to just twist the mic out of the way and wrap the PTT cable around itself. The ComTac II's commo package is removable (and doesn't come with this kit) so when you don't need it, you can just remove it. I love these. They're super comfortable, and I can easily wear them all day with no discomfort throughout the day. They're also very low profile, and hasn't impeded with the stocks of any weapons I've shouldered.

Purchased with the intended use for C-17s and C-130s with range time, I have tested them quite a bit before departure with my leaf blower, lawn mower, and of course range time. Outstanding. I bought the adapter to plug my iPod into the headset (which are there for radio and mic connections) -works great. low profile, easy to change batteries (if you need to) and absolutely amazing how it accentuates little sounds (brass tinkling on the ground) and lowers the load bang of the boom sticks.

Have had a pair of these for two years (have worn them well over 100 times) and they are great. Use them primarily for shotgunning and hunting, and also for rifle and pistol. They are comfortable, lightweight, and have an amazingly long battery life. Also like the fact that they cover your mastoid bone - which helps preserve your hearing over the long run. All in all, I believe these are some of the best muff-type hearing protectors on the market.

** There is no active noise cancelation with this headset. **Active noise cancelation is using microphones to detect certain incoming noises and cancel them out with speakers emitting an opposing sound wave. This devices AMPLIFIES low volume noises rather than cancels them out but is able to cut this function out if a noise, a gunshot for example, is above a safety threshold. In this respect, the Peltor headset is excellent. Rifle reports on the range are never amplified and, therefore, are nicely muted by the earpiece padding. Voices and other low-volume noises, however, are aplified so that you can hear them over that same dampening padding. It does pick up so many annoying background noises in addition to the voices and such that I wish to hear, I find myself wearing foam ear plugs as well. Wind is the prime culprit. This headset amplifies the wind pretty much constantly. Someone below mentioned cheap plastic headband. Mine is a steel band, covered in faux leather. It's super uncomfortable, placing such pressure upon my ears that I can only wear the Peltor set for limited periods of time. Everyone's threshold is different, but my ears can hurt all day long after wearing these things. The same vice-like grip and large ear pieces also interfere with the wearing of eye pro/sunglasses. Between the wind and the discomfort, the negatives are enough that I've started to leave my Peltor headset in the range bag more often than not. That's about the worst thing I can say about a piece of gear.

Cheaply Made,
This review is from: Peltor MT15H69FB-09 Com-Tac II Headset (Tools & Home Improvement)
Bought these and expected to be very sturdy. The plastic that goes over the head snapped while i was trying to put on my head. I have an average sized head, a size 7 hat. Called and would not help. Dissapointed.
