Book Description

January 18, 2001 Pet Love
The enchanting Pembroke Welsh Corgi, a dwarf in size but a giant in heart and personality, impresses one as a sturdy, workmanlike herding dog, a pure-bred whom the Welsh have revered for centuries. The breed’s characteristic foxy head, upright ears and soul-filled eyes make it an irresistible choice. For the owner or family seeking a friendly, able-bodies, "big-small" dog, the Pembroke will be delighted to make your acquaintance and share his life. This book provides the much-needed factual information about Pembroke Welsh Corgis and their characteristics, history in Wales, the US and beyond and the breed standard, as well as puppy selection, feeding, training, preventative health care and behavior of the breed. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, preparing for the pup’s arrival, housebreaking and preventing puppy problems.

In addition to an authoritative, comprehensive text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Corgi from puppyhood to the senior years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun for fanciers, impractical for new owners, January 8, 2009
By
I purchased this book soon after getting a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy. Since the front cover says "A comprehensive guide to owning and caring for your dog," I was expecting a breed specific guide to raising and training a Corgi puppy.

What I found instead was a guide rich in information about the breed, but lacking practicality for a new owner. The chapters on care and training tend to talk in generalities rather than specifics. They are more of an overview than a nuts-and-bolts how-to. It often tells you what to do, but not how to do it. As someone trying to train his new puppy, that's not very useful.

I would highly recommend this book to someone who is considering getting a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. It tells you a lot about the breed, and gives you a good idea about what you'll be getting into as a new owner. It also provides a good overview on training. However, I would not recommend it to someone who is a new puppy owner looking for guidance. A book specifically on puppy care and training would be a better choice in that situation.

Burton's volume covers the history, characteristics, training and care of your Pembroke Welsh Corgi. As a new dog owner, this book was a pleasure to read, being packed with useful information. The pictures and layout make this volume a great coffee table book. I highly recommend it.
