Book Description

The powder keg of war lights when the brutal legacy of Kim Jong-il is passed to his youngest son. As the Young General struggles to cope with his inheritance of fear, famine, disease, and death, there are powerful forces lurking in the shadows, ready to usurp control of the failing nation. When the dead dictator’s eldest son realizes his brother has lost control of their nation, he calls James Faulkirk to help him end his family’s vile nepocracy. James, an ex-CIA analyst haunted by the pain of his own losses, climbs out of his soju bottles as the countdown to war nears zero. But can the unlikely duo warn the world and rescue the Korean peninsula before it sinks into the putrid hole which has already rotted its very bedrock? PENALTY OF PRIDE: DISPERSIVE GROUND is the novel chronicling the violence, deceit, and death of a war that will destroy two nations.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars. Cliff Hanger Hell July 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I hate cliff hangers. I've hated them since Kristin Shepard shot J.R. Why-oh-why am I not more skeptical when I see the words "Book One?"

One of the most criticized aspects of any novel is a weak ending. Well, what about no ending? And there's nothing to be done about it. The second book in the series hasn't been published. I'm stunned and disappointed. Isn't the author aware that even in a series, readers crave some kind of intermediary wrap-up?

Other than the lack of an ending, this novel was on its way to being at least a 4-star book. It has a well conceived and executed plot, the writing is first rate and the character development is good. We see the start of the Second Korean War through the eyes of several main characters:

- Kim Jong-nam, the brother of Kim Jong-un and son of the deceased Kim Jong-il
- The scheming Jang Sung-taek, the power behind the throne of Kim Jong-un
- Lieutenant William Kidd, a member of the 80th Fighter Squadron in South Korea
- Korean Prisoner 10482, who labors "deep under Korean soil" excavating the tunnel
- James Faulkirk, an ex-CIA analyst and the leading expert on North Korea
- Frank McManus, the US National Intelligence Director, and
- General Garrison Lane, the commander of US Forces in Korea

The various story lines are distinct and easy to keep straight. However, there is no hero -- no one person you really root for among the all-male cast. Yet, at least. The pacing was also good and kept me turning the pages.

I'm giving this novel 3.5 stars now with the possibility of revising that upward when the rest of the series is available.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets! June 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is, hands down, the best military fiction I've read since "The Bear and the Dragon". The author's style is refreshing in the way he uses relatively short chapters spanning a dozen or more characters, giving you enough each time to develop his world intriguingly, but not so much that the pace ever slows down! The book is so digestible, and each chapter so manageable, that I found myself struggling to put the book down at night rather than reading "just one more".

I'm fascinated with this subject - the Korean situation - and the possibilities for conflict. The author has given me insights into the realities of the stand-off on the peninsula, and chilled me with the horrors that might yet come to pass. This brings me to my only wish: that in some way, our portal into this world were broadened enough to see the ways in which the hypothetical invasion of South Korea affects average people. We are left to imagine the casualties, which must be horrific, but never shown anything concrete.

I'm salivating in anticipation of the next book in the series. Please don't make us wait long!

5.0 out of 5 stars Military proud April 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
MJHangge was able to capture my deep interest while his words painted a clear picture that brought me back to my military time in Korea. He was dead on target with his portrayal of LT Kidd and the culture of a young, proud military pilot. Each character was so well developed that I couldn't help but want them to pull through their individual tragedies and turn the tide into heroism. I forced myself to ration the remaining pages in an effort to savor the artistry. Ben Coes and Vince Flynn have some serious competition with the addition of Hangge to the publication world. I am even more impressed with the quality of his prose knowing that he still serves our great nation with US Army Aviation and the legendary Night Stalkers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and enjoyable June 14, 2012
Format:Paperback
I was not sure what to expect from this book, and wasn't exactly excited to read it when my dad handed it to me. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by the emotion and candor that accompanied the action and suspense within each chapter. I liked how the book was organized and often thought to myself, "this could totally be a movie!" MJ Hangge effortlessly crafted storylines for several great characters throughout the book; not an easy feat. But probably what I liked the most was that his love for aviation was so readily apparent. Can't wait to see what else he has in store!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! April 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As I read the last page of this well crafted and compelling novel I cried out, "No!" I had so engaged with the characters and the story that I wasn't ready for it to end. This author knows history, the military and, perhaps most importantly, the hearts (both sinister and heroic) of humanity. He has certainly stolen my heart. Can't wait for the sequel, MJ Hangge.

mj Hangge has written a brilliant, informed novel of the dark, insane world of North Korea within a plot that seems to predict and echo developing events. His portrayal of a starving, brain-washed people, destroyed economy and evil, amoral leadership is horrifying. That the lack of touch with reality and maniacal quest for power could lead to war with South Korea and ultimately the world, is credible. Nothing is being done by the leaderless United States government to check North Korea's spiral into open war. This novel should be a wake-up call before we are drawn into a nuclear and ground war, which could devastate our country. The mindless, irresponsible basketball pro attempting to lead us in to believing that the murderer, Kim Jong-Un, is just a normal fun-loving young guy, should have his passport revoked and be charged with sedition. He is dangerously out of his league - and propagandising for the world's leading oppressor and terrorist could have serious implications. Quisling is the action word.

More About the Author

mjHangge is the genre-hopping author of three novels--Penalty of Pride, Shreds of Humanity, and Pyrolysis (set for an early-2014 release). His unique literary voice make his books fun and his varied interests will keep readers excited about his next projects. Like many authors, Mike's love of books came early in life. Once used as an escape from an odd childhood filled with everything from nudism to Buddhism, literature soon became both Mike's passion and escape.

His career as an Army aviator has already spanned over a quarter century, which has seen him progress from a Sergeant during Operations Desert Shield and Storm to a Special Ops Chief Warrant Officer through Operations Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn, and Enduring Freedom. He has worked beside some of the toughest and most incredible warriors in history, receiving numerous awards himself for his heroism and valor in direct contact with the enemy.

Mike writes from the green hills of Tennessee, the desert sands of Afghanistan, and the many hotel rooms in between. Between the bourbon, cigars, and voices his writing time is always tasty and never dull. Most of all, Mike enjoys his free moments with his wife and three daughters who keep him sane, happy, and motivated.
