Book Description

Penance June 18, 2008
From the pages of Civil War: Front Line and Thunderbolts! Once he was a hero, now only a shell of Robbie Baldwin remains. 3.0 out of 5 stars Marvel's "Civil War" Epilogue Suffers From Guest-Star Fatigue, September 7, 2008
This review is from: Penance: Relentless (Paperback)
"Penance: Relentless" follows the New Warriors' Speedball as he is consumed with guilt over the Stamford tragedy. He reads Marquis de Sade and creates a spiked bondage suit that's more S&M than superhero. It's an intriguing concept, one first dealt with in Warren Ellis's "Thunderbolts". In "Relentless," Speedball (now calling himself Penance) weaves his way through a plot that feels more contrived than twisted.

Why contrived? How about guest stars from Wolverine to Iron Man to the Fantastic Four to Dr. Doom failing to stop Penance? Really? The Fantastic Four are powerless against this former third-rate renegade superhero? It's a bit much. What could have been a simple and effective look at a man's broken psyche turns into just another superhero book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The public needed a scapegoat and created a sociopath, September 2, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Penance: Relentless (Paperback)
If you followed the New Warriors, Civil War Frontline, or the Thunderbolts then you know something of Robbie. Former New Warrior who was the public's scapegoat for the tragedy that stemmed the Civil War, turns into a twisted psychological mess following the tragedy. Now this book shows how Penance for the first time in his stand alone story. A good read as you get an inside look into his head, I hope to see more of this character if the Thunderbolts drop him.
