Product Description

Pencil is the most natural and expressive tool for getting ideas on Paper. Rest your hand on the screen and draw freely with best-in-class adaptive palm rejection. Blend with your fingers. Flip Pencil over to erase. Thin as a real pencil, with internally balanced components that feel right in your hand.

From the Manufacturer

Made for Paper

Pencil was made to work beautifully with the Paper by FiftyThree app (available for free in the Apple App Store). Paper was designed from the ground up for touch and creation on the go. It keeps you in the flow with no fussy buttons, settings or other distractions. Paper works the way you think, like a familiar notebook or journal. Have all of your ideas with you in one place.

Plays Nicely with Others

Pencil connects to great partner apps including Procreate, Noteshelf, Sketchbook Mobile and others. Pencil works well as a non-connected stylus on any touchscreen. We do not recommend the use of screen protectors while using Pencil.

Surface Pressure

Expressive from every angle. Pencil’s unique tip is shaped to create lines of all sizes without any settings. Use the point for fine details and the angled edge for broad strokes.

Be bold and make mistakes. Pencil’s unique built-in eraser lets you precisely carve away to get at what’s essential. No need to switch tools, just flip Pencil to erase.

Get hands-on with your ideas. Pencil takes care of the lines so you can use your finger to smooth rough edges and blend colours directly on the page. Create beautiful colour transitions for charts, skies, and shadows.

Crafted for Creativity

From the sustainably harvested wood body to the elegant technological core, every detail in Pencil combines beautiful engineering and meticulous craft.

About the Startup

Who are FiftyThree’s founders?

FiftyThree was founded by Georg Petschnigg, Andrew Allen, Julian Walker, and Jon Harris. The four met while working together at Microsoft; Georg, Andrew, and Jon worked on Microsoft Courier, while Julian worked on Photosynth, Bing Maps, and Silverlight. Where did you get the inspiration for your product?

FiftyThree started from the desire to create a new generation of tools for creative thinking, that took advantage of the powerful new technologies in mobile and social, yet were designed and built to reflect simple analog tools like a notepad and pencil.

Where did the company's name come from?

We founded FiftyThree to put the essential tools of creativity within arm’s reach and 53cm is the length of the arm’s reach. It’s the space where we create.

Who makes up FiftyThree’s team?

Our team is comprised of world-class designers, engineers, and community leaders who have been at the forefront of building simple, elegant, human-centric products and services. They have previously worked at such companies as Xbox, Sonos, Apple, Adobe, Google, Amazon, Flickr, and Vimeo.

I draw on an iPad Air 2 and repeatedly try different styli, with mixed success. None are really great, but Pencil by 53 is consistently the best performer, far less flakey than either the Adonit Jot Touch with Pixel Point or the Wacom Intuos Creative Stylus Two.

Each stylus works better with some apps than with others, but across the board, the Pencil performs best. The Pencil's broad, rubber point, which makes more difficult to see fine lines, offsets this disadvantage by allowing a far better feel on the surface of the iPad. The hard points of the Intuos and Adonit styli feel like trying to draw on ice of very slick glass (and the latter, of course, is exactly what you ARE trying to draw upon.)

All the styli that I have used on the Air 2 suffer from often not immediately starting to draw at the point where you first touch the screen. They also all sometimes temporarily skip when drawing lines. In short, all are cranky and harder to use than a pencil or pen on traditional media. The Pencil, in my opinion, is the best of the bunch, but none approach the precision or feel of using of using a Wacom tablet and stylus hooked to a laptop or desktop computer.

I have also tried Adobe's Ink and Slide and very much liked how it (they) worked with the Adobe apps (which are excellent) but, alas, the Ink stylus quit recharging within the first month that I owned it, so I returned it to Amazon and that's when I got the Wacom Intuos.

I still await, and long for, the "ideal" stylus for the iPad. Meanwhile the Pencil by 53 continues to be my "Go-to" sylus for the iPad Air 2. I hope this is helpful because I have spent quite a bit of time and money in my search and maybe it can help you in making your decision.

Ok, I have most of all the electronic pens available on the market. This one is special for two reasons. Number one it is a Bluetooth device that does not require a Bluetooth connection to be used. I happen to be typing this review with the pencil in one hand while using my thumb on my other hand. Combined with Fifty-Three's software app called Paper (which is free), when connected to Bluetooth the pencil has magnificent features every artist could ever want. To me, it's like having fifty-three different types of pens, pencils, paintbrushes, a an awesome color palette that can be mixed to your heart's every artistic desire. The other reason I love this pencil is because my father was a carpenter and used the pencil this is modeled after. He is passed on, but working with this pencil brings back warm memories of him as he used his pencil with his work. I cannot recall a day he was not holding one in his hand, or tucked behind his ear. Now, I use one for my art. I am not a professional artist by any stretch, but this pencil can really help someone learn the basics of art without all the mess. It has brought art back into my life after a long hiatus. If you are not sure about this pencil, please know my review is much longer than other products I have purchased here at Amazon. I took the time because I know how I felt when I was shopping for another digital art tool. Out of all, this is my absolute favorite. Easy to use, extremely comfortable in my hand (ergonomic), and keeps a charge for quite a long time. But again, if you are not needing to use the features of the Paper app, no charge is necessary. Finally, I have attached a piece of art I did with this pencil, to give you an idea on what can be done. Keep in mind, I am an amateur artist. I hope you are as happy with this product as I am. Enjoy!

This pencil works like a dream. It feels absolutely amazing in your hands. There's just something amazing about holding walnut wood in your hands that makes you feel totally awesome! It glides across my iPad Air's screen with ease. As a standalone stylus, it's ridiculously beautiful and works very well. Combine it with Paper by 53, and it's a dream come true. I would HIGHLY recommend this product, just realize you're going to have to mess with it a little to really get it to work as described.

1) Feels and looks amazing. Very sturdy
2) Amazing stylus, even better with the app "Paper by 53"
3) Magnet is very strong, I've had no issues having this "snap" to my iPad cover and stay put as I move about.
4) Comes with replacements tips

1) Expensive (for a stylus...)
2) slightly gimmicky. Again, once you fiddle with it though, it's amazing.

** Troubleshooting **
* I had to replace the eraser tip with the extra one they included
* I also had to take the pencil tip off, clean, and put it back on as tight and snug as I could.
* I had to rub my finger along the gold USB charge plates to get it to charge

The eraser function on my Pencil didn't work. When I visited technical support on the fifty-three site, I discovered that this was an all too common flaw. Worse, after a half-hour of pointless troubleshooting with a staff member there I was informed that my warranty was null because I purchased through Amazon. Lovely.

A few other comments: The weight of the stylus feels good in the hand, as does the Walnut material. The writing tip, however, is squishy and often loses capacitive contact, leaving broken lines in the app. Not worth the hassle, and definitely not worth $100.
