Editorial Reviews

Krzysztof Penderecki is Poland's leading contemporary composer and he stands at the forefront of modern music. In this programme, recorded at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, one of Europe's most prestigious concert venues, he conducts the Sinfonietta Cracovia in performances of four of his own works. Each piece is introduced by the composer. Penderecki is closely associated with the Sinfonietta Cracovia, which was formed by graduates of the Cracow Academy of Music in 1991. Impressed by the excellent standard of their work, he helped to establish them as a permanent orchestra, supported by the city of Cracow.

Soloist: Mariusz Pedzialek
Soloist: Tabea Zimmermann
Soloist: Irena Grafenauer

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Mohamed M. Elsamahi on March 8, 2010

This production is interesting. Penderecki is among the few serious composers of the twentieth century that do not shock the listener. His music is innovative without being hard to digest. The composer explores the capabilities of the viola, oboe, and flute. While watching and listening, one realizes that the potentials of these instruments have not been exhausted by the classicists and romantics. The reason why Penderecki's music is beautiful is that it is both experimental and accessible to audience. This would be a good DVD for music lovers who would like to experience a taste of contemporary music. Kultur would do us a great service if they produce more contemporary works. It is a pity that the 20th century music is still largely ignored by music lovers and orchestras.

Penderecki is composer, conductor and musical intelligence on this dvd. His comments before each selection are not chatty but delve deeply into the nature of the music, his goal in writing it, and its significance for the listener. None of his larger works is included, nor are any of his innovative and shocking works performed. These are all works for a chamber ensemble, which explains the feeling of intimacy between leader and orchestra members and between us and him via dvd technology. The only thing I missed in this production was a large, responsive
audience, which I know would have in

PENDERECKIcreased the level of intensity. But that should not be seen as a deal-breaker! There are many delights to experience repeatedly by means of this dvd. For me, the chief delight is a wonderfully lyrical VIOLA concerto, expertly played by Tabea Zimmermann. This concerto is not as intense as his violin concertos; it's rather relaxed in places but always absorbing and beautiful. Tabea is a charismatic performer. The Viola Concerto is framed by two other concertos, one for oboe, one for flute. These works seem almost neo-classical to me in contrast to the obvious romantic proclivities of the Viola Concerto. Penderecki involves both soloists with other members of the orchestra, creating a memorable web of sounds that delight both ear and mind.
