About the Author

Larry J. Sabato is founder and director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. A renowned political prognosticator, he correctly projected–as early as July 2008–that Barack Obama would win the Presidency in a near-landslide. He predicted a 364-174 margin in the Electoral College, just one vote away from the final tally of 365-173, and forecasted President Obama's exact 53% popular vote margin. He accurately predicted 99% of Senate, House, and Governor winners in both the 2006 and 2008 elections.

For anyone following today's Congress, they must have an understanding of the previous congressional election, and no one encapsulates the outcome of the 2010 election better than Larry Sabato and his crew! The thing that struck me the most about Pendulum Swing was its readability, no matter whether you are a Republican, a Democrat, or an impartial observer (and before you try and argue that Democrats wouldn't want this book, let me remind you that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it!). People like me who are interested both in the mechanics of elections and their policy implications will get all they need in these pages. Sabato got it right in the summer of '10, and he gets it right here!

If you're wondering where the new 112th Congress is headed, it's important to know how they got there. I'm finding this book to be very helpful in that regard. It's is filled with lots of rich content on all the key races of 2010, but it goes even further. Pendulum Swing is well-written and features analysis of many topics from Congress to governor's races to campaign spending and use of social media. Well-documented sources, each chapter offers a new topic and a different author. While a few of the chapters repeated stats that have been in the news since November, it still offered new perspectives on the topic. Every chapter is filled with completely fresh material and covers information that might not be available otherwise. One thing is certain: There's something in this book for any person who's interested in federal and state politics.

Just finished reading "Pendulum Swing" and I must say, it would be necessary reading for anyone who teaches about campaigns and elections. The essays and their authors concisely hit on the topics that made the 2010 Mid-Terms so interesting. I really liked that a wide variety of view-points were presented. A great primer for understanding modern campaign politics.

Sabato and the contributing authors put together a comprehensive analysis of the 2010 midterms. With easy to follow writing, they detail what happened overall and in individual key races, and offer some thought provoking implications for what might happen in 2012 and how the newly elected leaders might govern. A must read for anyone interested in American Politics.
