4.0 out of 5 stars Penelope
Penelope

Penelope has hidden in the shadows for too long. She is different from all of the other kids because of a curse passed on for generations through her family. The idea is that she has to get married to break the curse of her pig-shaped face. Penelope can't find anyone to marry her. She is tired of being locked away in her home and is breaking loose...

It was a cute fairytale with a modern twist and a strong message for girls. The writing was average. The story moved quickly and the characters were interesting but there wasn't a lot of depth. Penelope

Penelope has hidden in the shadows for too long. She is different from all of the other kids because of a curse passed on for generations through her family. The idea is that she has to get married to break the curse of her pig-shaped face. Penelope can't find anyone to marry her. She is tired of being locked away in her home and is breaking loose from her parents. As you go along with Penelope on an epic adventure you will discover how a young adult takes in the present-day world. I enjoyed this story a lot and can't wait to read it again. I loved how the author intertwined a fairytale with an everyday book. I think anyone would enjoy the story of Penelope and her "once upon a time" life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read., February 23, 2008
This review is from: Penelope (Paperback)
It's clear that the target age for this book is tweens/early teens, but I'm in my late teens and absolutely loved it. I read lots of really "deep" and detailed/intricate books, and this one was a welcome break from that. The story is very light hearted yet wonderful all the same. I LOVE this book! :D

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read!!!, February 16, 2008
This review is from: Penelope (Paperback)
This was a great book to read! I read it because I thought the movie looked interesting. Now I can't wait to see the movie! I thought it was going to be an extremely predictable novel, but it actually wasn't. Of course it has a happy ending, but it's not what you think will happen.

This is a great book and you should buy it, then see the movie!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and uplifting, December 28, 2007

Young girls seeking to define themselves should love reading this modern-day fairy tale. Penelope Wilhern is a wealthy 25-year-old with a curse: she was born with a pig's snout. The honker will magically turn into a normal nose when "someone of her own kind, a true blue blood, will accept her as she is." As her socialite mom attempts to find a willing beau, Penelope learns to love herself for reasons beyond beauty.

My only qualm? The back story. Explaining why the curse exists, it describes Penelope's great-great-great grandfather Ralph's affair with a scullery maid, who engaged in "certain other activities that Ralph and Clara enjoyed immensely." Clara gets pregnant, with disastrous results. The book's target age range is 9 to 12 years old, and this seems a little mature for girls that age.

In the introduction, actress Reese Witherspoon explains why she was inspired to develop the story into the new movie.

I loved Penelope, it's been a good book to have. I saw the movie before I read the book, but I loved the book best. I have ways loved fairy talea and stuff like that. When I picked up the book I knew it would be sooo much better than the movie.
