5.0 out of 5 stars Chongo Chingi is fantastic!
The illustrations and imagery in this book are fantastic -- whimsical, hallucinatory and totally unique. Children will enjoy, but so will adults. This is an imaginative, and darling book -- BUY IT!

Our twin daughters were a couple months shy of 3 when I got them this book. They like penguins, and I love Seibold's style of illustration. 5.0 out of 5 stars Baby loves it!, June 12, 2000
This review is from: Penguin Dreams (I Can Sleep Book) (Hardcover)
My 8.5 mo old son finds this book so enticing I can't leave it lying around, he makes excited noises every time I turn a page. He has no to mild interest in most other books. The only negative is that many adult readers stumble over Chongo Chingi's name. I think the odd detail in the illustrations will likely hold the interest of an older toddler or preschooler too, unlike most books suitable for small babies. I like the offbeat style which is a refreshing change from so many pastel or primary colored children's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Geared to the younger set, November 7, 2000

Finally a book by the fantastic author/illustrator duo of Walsh/Seibold that is aimed at 4 - 8 year old children. My two kids (4 and 5) beg to have this book read over and over. They can read the story to me and the stroy makes perfect sense to them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Art for kids, February 22, 2002
This review is from: Penguin Dreams (I Can Sleep Book) (Hardcover)
I love Seibold. My wife loves him. My little daughter will (she's too young). The thing with Mr. J. Otto Seibold is not that his books are beautiful. They're smart too. In my opinion, there's no other name in children's picture books. Not even Maira Kalman. Seibold is a true artist, using Adobe Illustrator. I only wish he publishes more. For instance, where's the book "Bubblesoup"?
Aha! You can get it online at [his web site], it's just incredible. This one, with music, sound, and action, my little daughter already loves.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice j.otto journey for very young readers, February 4, 2003

This review is from: Penguin Dreams (I Can Sleep Book) (Hardcover)
A nice little dream journey by j.otto Seibold and V.L. Walsh for the very young book-looker. Chongo Chingi is a penguin who dreams of flying, all the way to outer space, then is woken up by the alarm clock. Very few words here, much fewer than most of their books. Also simpler drawings on most pages with a few spreads of the famously inventive j.otto detail. Might not appeal as much to older readers as most j.otto books but still recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars love the illustrations and text, September 5, 2006

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While perhaps not for those who want a very traditional children's story about penguins, etc., this book has been a big hit in our household. Its somewhat disconnected images and text are not in a linear story--they're meant to give the sense of a dream. And they're well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars visual delight, December 21, 2010
A sophisticated book for 3 year olds! They can drink in the story from the vivid illustrations. The story is light and the pictures are dense and inviting. My kids love looking through this book. They notice all sorts of details that get them excited.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, July 16, 2010
Our twin daughters were a couple months shy of 3 when I got them this book. They like penguins, and I love Seibold's style of illustration. I picked the book up, looked at the first couple of pages, and bought it. I wish I had looked through it all. The first couple of pages there there were some well rhymed written blurbs to go with the pictures, but after that very little by way of words, so nothing to read. I don't mind the lack of story or the way "jumps" as others have mentioned, I am just bothered by the lack of readability. A gorgeous looking book and I love the feel of the cover paper and pages, nice high quality publishing materials. So, I am neutral on this book, depends on what you are looking for in a book.

I picked up PENGUIN DREAMS because penguins are one of my favorite animals and I'm always on the lookout for a good penguin book to share with children I know. The book doesn't have a lot of words and has some really interesting pictures. Basically, there's this penguin called Chongo Chingi (sounds like a monkey name to me) who falls to sleep and has a dream. And what a bizarre dream it is. I'm not sure how much younger children will enjoy this book, but for those around kindergarten age and older it might be a hoot. Actually, even though it's a children's book, adults are probably the people who can most appreciate the book's artistic splendor. Little kids will probably find it boring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a weird book, August 3, 2008
First, let me say that the artwork is really cool.

The story though... it's about what you'd expect from a dream. It jumps around a lot. I like it, my nieces like it, but I can appreciate that some kids might not get it. That's cool.

Very short, as well. If your kid gets into it, that means it's great for hurried bedtimes.
