5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, November 4, 2004

There is so much to say about this book. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful--rich and vibrant, in the perfect shades--and the story is simple and complex at the same time. There are so many lessons here, like: you should word requests carefully so that you get exactly what you want; sometimes even when you get what you want it isn't quite what you expected; if you love someone, you should worry about his/her needs and desires as well as your own; taking care of someone else is a big responsibility. The whimsical details of a penguin's life with a boy all lend themselves to teaching these lessons. This is probably a great book for a kid who asks Santa for a pet every year, and it's also really entertaining for adults. The author could have made the story excessively sappy, but instead she gave it just the right amount of emotion--it's beautiful.

This review is from: My Penguin Osbert (Hardcover)
Here is a children's book that should be on every bookshelf!! Elizabeth Cody Kimmel tells the most charming story that incorporates a wonderful message that every child should learn! Not only is the story superb, but H.B. Lewis has done the most vivid, colorful and amazing illustrations! I could stare at them all day!
Thanks to Elizabeth & H.B.!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Small but great!, January 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I already knew that I loved this book, but I just wasn't expecting such a small-sized book to arrive. It's about the size of oone of the old Golden books. I probably should have read more about what I was getting. Regardless, it's a great story that my kids love!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book!, February 22, 2007
This review is from: My Penguin Osbert (Hardcover)
Despite the fact that this book has a young child writting lettrs to Santa, it is now February and we are still reading it! My son has hundreds of books and this is his favorite of all of them!

We read and discuss the lessons that are learned. My little one (he is 2) now knows that he has to take care of the people and animals he loves and not always do what HE wants.

We can not wait for more books by this wonderful author!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Guaranteed Smile!, November 28, 2006
This review is from: My Penguin Osbert (Hardcover)
This book is just wonderful! The artwork is pleasing, as is the story. I read this book aloud to my youngest 2 children. My husband who was in the dining room, would giggle as he listened from in there. My teenage son also reacted the same way. It's a guaranteed smile!

5.0 out of 5 stars OSBERT THE PENGUIN, February 23, 2005
This review is from: My Penguin Osbert (Hardcover)
I'M BUYING ANOTHER COPY OF THIS BOOK. YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHEN READING REVIEWS- ALOT OF BAD BOOKS GET 5-STARS, BUT THIS ONE HAS DEFINATELY EARNED IT'S 5 STARS. THIS IS SUCH A GREAT BOOK! IT TEACHES KIDS TO BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR, BECAUSE WE OFTEN DON'T REALLY WANT WHAT WE THINK WE DO. UNLIKE A REAL PENGUIN, YOU WANT THIS BOOK & YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU GOT IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the book for kids in love with the idea of an impractical pet!, January 15, 2012
This review is from: My Penguin Osbert (Paperback)
It's interesting that most reviewers identify this as a general "careful what you wish for" story. To me, as a lifelong animal lover, it was much more specific. It's a very humorous and sweet look at the many life changes necessary to properly care for an exotic animal (cold herring for breakfast because penguins don't like pancakes is just the beginning). I could've used a book like this when I was a kid asking for every impractical animal under the sun! It also has a lovely illustration style that's icing on the cake. I'm pleased to see there's a sequel to this one, and will need to check that out as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars new family favorite, December 6, 2011

This review is from: My Penguin Osbert (Paperback)
This is one item I'm taking the time to review. I never do it- though i should- but in this case I must. I've been a mom for 15 years and we are well versed in delightful children's books. My youngest child is 5 and we just pulled this book out of the storage bin with our decorations and rediscovered how charming it is. I just ordered 3 more copies along with some stuffed animal penguins to give as gift sets to other children this year. Too sweet. Great, great illustrations. And for me, if the illustrations are boring it can almost ruin an otherwise good children's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, November 17, 2009
This review is from: My Penguin Osbert (Paperback)
The perfect children's book. All the elements are here. A sweet, funny, touching story with a great lesson. And the illustrations are breath-taking. They really melt the heart and transport both kids and adults. I never tire of reading this one to my kids- and neither do they!
