PreSchool-K-While exploring, Penguin Pete happens upon an abandoned ship. Once aboard, he meets Horatio, the ship mouse. After eating in the storeroom, they explore the ship, climbing ropes to view the depth of the sea, get tangled in an old fishing net, and play hide-and-seek. Pete goes for a swim, while nonswimmer Horatio boards a lifeboat, which starts to sink, and the penguin scurries to save his new friend. The story ends with Pete swimming across the waters waving good-bye and promising to visit again-and to teach Horatio how to swim. The simple text allows room for discussion. Children will find security in knowing that others fear swimming, and in a friend like Pete who provides support and encouragement. The pastel watercolor illustrations bring the string of adventures to life. While the characters are cartoonlike figures, their facial expressions convey human emotions of joy, uncertainty, and anticipation.
