Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?Penguin Pete and his son Tim start the day with a walk in their icy, polar world, engaging in a snowball fight and taking a ride on a dogsled. Snow begins to fall, and as the wind howls, Tim looks up to find that his dad is nowhere in sight. Soon a friendly seal offers to take him for a dip in the frigid water, and after a brief swim he returns to land and awaits the reunion with his father. The short, choppy sentences make for a quick, yet uneven read. Tim's statement to Pete that "I didn't think you were ever going to find me" seems out of place, since the tiny creature spent most of his "lost" time swimming contentedly with a seal. Watercolors applied to wet paper create a soft, snowy atmosphere?a perfect setting for the story. The penguins, however, don't rise above the look of fuzzy stuffed animals. They appear stiff and their facial expressions rarely vary enough to convey personality or mood. In all, a disappointing effort.?Lynn Cockett, Nutley Public Library, NJ

From Booklist

Ages 3-5. In another delightful episode in the Penguin Pete series, papa Pete proves to be a real 1990s dad, letting mom sleep while he takes Tim out for a fun-filled winter adventure. Mischievous little Tim bombards Pete with snowballs, rides on an old dogsled, tumbles down a hill, and goes for a swim with some seals. The lighthearted fun turns a bit more serious when a blinding snowstorm separates Tim and Pete, but Tim shows the strength of the father-son bond and the unwavering trust he has in his dad by not panicking and remembering his father's advice: "If you ever get lost, stay right where you are and I'll come and find you." Pete's winter wonderland is beautifully depicted in soft pastel washes of lavender, gray, blue, and green with occasional splashes of sunny gold and orange. This endearing father-and-son team will warm a child's heart on the coldest winter day. Lauren Peterson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book not just for toddlers, but also for baby to 3, March 23, 2002
This review is from: Penguin Pete and Little Tim (Paperback)
My two years old son loves this book very much. It is about a little pengiun who got lost and how it found his Daddy at last. The full pictures are so charming and cute that he always asks me to read it for him before going to bed. Even my son still cannot read, but he can tell me the story with the pictures. It is worth to have one in your own library!
