Biography

Even if you never find out what a Penguin Prison is, there’s no denying Chris Glover aka Penguin Prison has made a brilliant record. If you’re a fan of New York disco, as accessible as it is angular, all burbling bass lines, resonant rhythms, shimmering synths and heavenly melodies, then you’ll love the new Penguin Prison album.

Imagine, if you will, Chic produced by ... Read more in Amazon's Penguin Prison Store

Editorial Reviews

Penguin Prison is the album you get if you have lived your life believing that the Holy Grail in terms of pop songs is one or all of the following: Billie Jean, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, When Doves Cry and Fast Love. It posits Penguin Prison as an American cousin to Hot Chip. It is an album about relationships, love and loathing that you can dance to. Its hi-tech rhythms and lyrics definitely place it as a pop album but the heartache might conceivably be found on a country record.

I saw this band open up for Neon Trees in Philly and they were enjoyable so I downloaded their single. Quality tunes. Very 80s/dance style.

Penguin Prison is the one-man band of Chris Glover. Penguin Prison released a couple of promising singles in 2009 ("Animal Animal") and 2010 ("The Worse If Gets") and last Fall the debut album finally came out. If you are unfamiliar with the sounds of Penguin Prison, think LCD Soundsystem/Scissor Sisters.

"Penguin Prison" (11 tracks; 46 min.) starts off with the latest single, an infectuous but ridiculously titled "Don't F**k With My Money". That song set the tome for pretty much the entire album, as it is an outright dance party from start to almost-finish. "A Funny Thing" is the b-side of the first single "Animal Animal", and quite good too. "Multi-Millionaire" is drenched in a late 70s atmosphere. "Something I'm Not" (also on that 1010 "The Worse Gets Gets" single) eerily reminds me of Justin Timberlake, including the use of the falsetto voice. It's my favorite track on this album. "The Worse Its Gets" has a nice stomping beat to it. "Desert Gold" sounds like it escaped from the early 1980s (think Pet Shop Boys). And on and on... The closer "Someone Got Everything" is completely different from the previous 10 tracks: an acoustic driven, slower song.

In all, what an album! Enjoyable from start to finish. I had the good fortune of catching Penguin Prison in concert this past weekend at the Rock and Roll Hotel in Washington, DC. In a live setting this is now a trio, and they played most of the songs from this album, and live the songs sounded even louder, harder and simply better than on the album. Can't wait to see these guys again! Meanwhile "Penguin Prison" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!! March 24, 2012

This is one of the best albums I have heard! The songs are very catchy and fun. The songs are layered with electronic music that remind me of the days back in the 80's but still have a fresh sound. I highly recommend this album.
