First Rate Satire,
By Chad Bagley "Chad" (Shanghai China/Provo, UT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Penguin Soup for the Soul: A Novel (Paperback)
All of Tom Tomorrow's books are great. Unlike alot of cartoonist that like to fancy themselves on the edge- Tom actually is. His cartoons are biting, timely, and go for the jugular. This guy isn't afraid to point out hypocricy, stupidity or just flat out irony wherever he finds it. You gotta love a cartoonist that gets dumped by the 'U.S. News and World Report' for being too contraversial.Sparky may be flightless, but he's one tough bird.

Fun with Sparky,

Tom Tomorrow has always been able to see the bigger picture, dissect the larger issues and cut through the glaze of popular media to illustrate the absudities of modern America. I'm probably biased because I've found his politics to match my own. At the same time "This Modern World" and especially "Penguin Soup for the Soul" is so laugh-out-loud funny that it transcends mere satire but never loses its edge in the process.

If your refrigerator, like mine, is the resting place for dozens of yellowed and wrinkled Tom Tomorrow cartoons, then do yourself a favor and buy this book. While you're at it, buy it for all your friends, especially those who need a little enlightening. He says what has to be said, and in four lousy panels says it better than most pundits can do with 1000 words. he is an equal opportunity critic, poking fun at Bill as often as Newt, but always scathingly brilliant and to the point.

Edgy & Funny,

This strip is even more enjoyable in book form. Once you get going, it's tough to put down. Perkins lays it on the line in each strip without pulling punches. Enjoy!Note: The strips are highly topical and focus around 1996-7.

Tom Tomorrow is an omnipotent political God! So many of these cartoons had me laughing out loud. This Modern World is *the* place to find the most scathing, to-the-bone critiques you'll find on the madness prevalent in Washington and elsewhere around the world. Buy it!

Tomorrow was never so bright!!,

Once again Tom Tomorrow (aka Dan Perkins) comes through with a collection of original, witty comics that are socially minded. Using familiar 50's clip art, Tomorrow crams more substance into one strip than many newspapers fill one edition with. Only taking the side of fairness and reason, Tomorrow raises issues often left off of the comics page. The only downside to the strip, as Sparky, the spunky mascot will attest, is that there seems to be enough injustice and stupidity in the world to fill several more volumes of books. A sad commentary for the state of society, a great benefit for Tom Tomorrow's many fans. Buy this book!!

Better and funnier than Hank Ketchum,

Really, get this guy a talk show, already. Full of vinegar and piss, and much funnier than Family Circus or Cathy. Reminds me of the early Garfield, when Davis was a real radical guy.

If you're to the left you'll like it; if you're to the right you won't. It's that simple.

Hey, I've bought 'em all, and enjoyed most of the strips, so consider this recommended. But here's the caveat: more than ocassionally, Tom Tommorow's strips reflect the rote knee-jerk leftism that turns-off a lot of possibly sympathetic souls. But hey, these folks were always as much against the Scoop Jackson liberals as they were the Nixons, and at least TT comes at you from the front rather than sneaking up from behind.

LYNCHED IN THE WILD WEST !,
This review is from: Penguin Soup for the Soul: A Novel (Paperback)
That's right pardners, I would say that this specific material is a combination of Doonsbury and Dilbert in a white trash motorcycle gang . Mr. Perkins was tarred and feathered when he was surrounded by a State REP.( true story ) He was thrown out of the Oklahoma City market by some lawyers for some of his strong ideas . The funny thing is that it was just a FREE weekly newspaper that supports the Arts community . Doesn't even have a large Circulation number.
